Forging nails; dies; shearing-adjuncts.-In a machine for making nails from wire the jaws 29, Fig. 2, for holding the wire while being headed and the pointing cutters 30 are arranged on opposite sides of the mean axis of the wire and are actuated by the same slide. The wire 31 is fed by grippers 60, Fig. 1, on a slide 56 which is reciprocated bv an adjustable linkage and a cam 59, retrograde movement being prevented by a pawl 63. The wire passes through a guide 33, Fig. 2, by which it is presented, after each feed, first to the cutters and then to the jaws. The guide is moved by a lever 34 and cam 37, accurate positioning being insured by stops 38, 39 and 41. While held in the jaws, the wire is headed by two blows of a die 7 carried by a cylindrical slide 6 which is reciprocated by a cam 5 and lever 4 and between the blows is oscillated, by a cam 19, lever 16 and rod 17, the return movement being effected by springs 11, 13. The oscillation of the slide 6 also causes an arm 9 of the tool clamp 8 to knock the nail out of the cutters 30. The tools 29, 30 are held by pivoted clamps 49, Fig. 1, in a. slide 26 and a. second slide 28 movable on the first. Relative movement between the slides is obtained by a spring and toggles 51, 52 operated, twice between each feed, by a link 20 and cams 24, 25.
