Abstract

A socket outlet 10 incorporates a replaceable fuse in a fuse-holder 15. A plug 16 mated with the socket 10 obscures the fuse-holder 15.

Description

ELECTRIC SUPPLY SOCKET This invention concerns an electric supply socket.
Normally such sockets are unfused and each plug engageable therewith carries its own fuse.
The invention is based on an appreciation of the possibility of providing a single electric supply socket which is fused, thereby reducing the total number of fuses required and permitting plugs of simpler construction not having replaceable fuses therein particularly readily moulded onto an end of a supply cord for an electric appliance at the time of manufacture.
According to the invention, then, there is provided a single electric supply socket having a replaceable fuse incorporated therewith.
The fuse may be removed and replaced through an aperture in the fuse plate of the socket.
The aperture may lie at least partially within the footprint of a plug inserted into the socket to prevent removal or replacement of the fuse when a plug is so inserted.
The invention will be further apparent from the following description with reference to and as illustrated by the single figure of the accompanying drawing, which shows, by way of example only, a front elevation of one form of electric supply socket embodying same.
Referring now to the drawing, it will be seen that the face plate 10 of a standard British 13 Amp power supply socket having apertures 11, 12 and 13 adapted to receive the earth, line and neutral pins of a standard plug respectively has an additional aperture 14 adapted to receive and locate a fuse carrier 15 mounting a fuse to lie in the supply to the line terminal of the socket.
The outer end of the carrier 15 is conveniently slotted to enable its removal and securement by a part-turn using a screwdriver or other suitable instrument.
At least a part of the aperture 14 lies beneath the footprint 16 of a plug inserted into the socket to prevent removal or replacement of the carrier 15 when a plug is so inserted.
It will be understood that any number of appliances may be provided with unfused plugs (conveniently factory moulded onto their supply cords) and protected when connected with the socket of the invention.
The inability to remove or replace the fuse carrier when the circuit is loaded is an obvious safety feature.
It will be understood that multiple supply sockets wherein each socket has its own fuse may be provided.
It will be appreciated that it is not intended to limit the invention to the above example only, many variations, such as might readily occur to one skilled in the art, being possible, without departing from the scope thereof as defined by the appended claims

Claims (2)

  1. CLAIMS 1. According to the present invention there is provided a single electric supply socket having a replaceable fuse incorporated therewith.
  2. 2. An electric supply socket arrangement comprising a plurality of single supply sockets according to claim 1.
    2. A supply socket according to claim 1 wherein the fuse may be removed and replaced through an aperture in the fuse plate of the socket.
    3. A supply socket according to claim 2 wherein the aperture lies at least partially within the footprint of a plug inserted into the socket to prevent removal or replacement of the fuse when a plug is so inserted.
    4. An electric supply socket arrangement comprising a plurality of single supply sockets according to any preceding claim.
    Amendments to the claims have been filed as follows CLAIMS 1. A single electric supply socket having a replaceable fuse in a fuse carrier incorporated therewith, which carrier may be removed and replaced through an aperture in the face plate of the socket, said aperture lying at least partially within the footprint of a plug inserted into the socket to prevent removal or replacement of the fuse carrier when a plug is so inserted, and the fuse carrier when installed not protruding from the face plate of the socket.
