Description
A PACRAGING APPLICATOR
This invention relates to a packaging applicator.
Packaging material is often supplied in roll form for wrapping around packages of various shapes and sizes. Often the rolls of packaging material are not as convenient to handle as they might be. This is especially so in situations where a lot of packaging occurs, for example in industrial applications such as warehouses.
It is an aim of the present invention to reduce the above mentioned problem.
Accordingly, in one non-limiting embodiment of the present invention there is provided a packaging applicator comprising a cylindrical support member, a roll of packaging material positioned on a first part of the support member, a cylindrical sleeve member mounted on a second part of the support member, and a plug member which is located in one end of the support member and which holds the sleeve member in position on the second part of the support member such that the sleeve member is positioned between the plug member and an adjacent part of the roll of packaging material, and the packaging applicator being such that the sleeve member forms a handle part of the packaging applicator, and the sleeve member is able to stop or permit rotation of the support member and the roll of packaging material by an operator squeezing and releasing the sleeve member.
The packaging applicator of the present invention is especially convenient for industrial use. The packaging applicator can also be used for domestic use if desired.
Usually, the packaging applicator will be one in which the support member is a tube, and in which the sleeve member is a tube. Also usually the support member and the sleeve member will be made of cardboard.
Other materials may be employed if desired.
Preferably, the sleeve member is provided with a longitudinal slit for allowing the sleeve member to vary in its diametrical size as it is squeezed and released.
Preferably, the longitudinal slit extends from one end of the sleeve member nearly to the other end of the sleeve member, the unslotted end of the sleeve member then serving to retain the sleeve member on the support member. Preferably, the longitudinal slit extends from the end of the sleeve member adjacent the roll of packaging material. If desired however the longitudinal slit may extend from the other end of the sleeve member.
Also if desired, the longitudinal slit may extend the entire length of the sleeve member but then the sleeve member should be sufficiently rigid to ensure that it does not easily slip off the support member.
The packaging applicator may be one in which the plug member has a body portion which is positioned in the support member, and a flange which is sufficiently large that it abuts against adjacent ends of both the support member and the sleeve member. The plug member is unusual in that its flange has to be sufficiently large to abut against the adjacent ends of both the support member and the sleeve member. Normally a plug member having a flange for abutment purposes is such that the flange only has to abut against one member, instead of the support member and the flange member in the packaging applicator of the present invention. The plug member forms an easy and convenient way of locating the sleeve member on the support member whilst at the same time allowing the support member to rotate inside the sleeve member when desired.
The body portion of the plug member advantageously has friction-giving means on its outer surface. The friction-giving means are preferably circumferential rings on the outer surface. A general roughened outer surface may alternatively be employed.
The plug member is preferably made of a plastics material. A presently prefered plastics material is polyethylene. When the plug member is made of a plastics material, then the plug member will usually be a moulded plug member.
Preferably, the roll of packaging material is wound directly on the first part of the support member.
However, if desired, the roll of packaging material may be wound on a separate cylindrical tube which may then be positioned on the support member. The roll of packaging material or the separate cylindrical tube when it is employed should be such that the roll of packaging material does not rotate with respect to the support member during use of the packaging applicator.
Preferably, the roll of packaging material is a roll of plastics film. A presently preferred plastics film is that known as cling film. Any suitable and appropriate packaging material may be employed. The roll of the packaging material may be in any suitable desired width and thickness.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described solely by way of example and with reference to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a packaging applicator;
Figure 2 is a side view of the packaging applicator shown in Figure 1; and
Figure 3 is a side view of a plug member used in the packaging applicator.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a packaging applicator 2 comprising a cylindrical support member 4, a roll of packaging material 6 positioned on a first part 8 of the support member 4, a cylindrical sleeve member 10 positioned on a second part 12 of the support member 4, and a plug member 14 which is located in one end 16 of the support member 4.
The plug member 14 is such that it holds the sleeve member 10 in position on the second part 12 of the support member 4. The sleeve member 10 is then positioned between the plug member 14 and an adjacent end 18 of the roll of packaging material 6. The packaging applicator 2 is such that the sleeve member 10 forms a handle part of the packaging applicator 2. The sleeve member 10 is able to stop or permit rotation of the support member 4 and the roll of packaging material 6 by an operator (not shown) squeezing and releasing the sleeve member 10.
The support member 4 is a tube of cardboard, and the sleeve member 10 is also a tube of cardboard.
The sleeve member 10 is provided with a longitudinal slit 20 for allowing the sleeve member 10 to vary in its diametrical size as it is squeezed and released. This then allows the sleeve member 10 to apply more or less friction to the support member 4 and to stop or permit rotation of the support member 4 inside the sleeve member 10. When rotation of the support member 4 is permitted, then the roll of packaging material 6 can be wound around an object to be packaged and the packaging material can be unwound as desired simply by the operator holding the packaging applicator 2 in one hand. When it is desired to tension the packaging material, it is only necessary to squeeze the sleeve member 10 to stop the rotation of the support member 4.If it is then desired to continue wrapping the object, the operator can release his or her grip on the sleeve member 10 to the extent that the support member 4 is then able to rotate inside the sleeve member 10. When the object has been packaged, then the packaging material can simply be cut or torn from the roll of packaging material 6.
The slit 20 extends from one end 22 of the sleeve member 10 nearly to the other end 24 of the sleeve member 10. The unslotted end 24 of the sleeve member 10 then serves to retain the sleeve member 10 on the support member 4. As can be seen from Figures 1 and 2, the slit 20 extends from the end 22 of the sleeve member 10, which is the end of the sleeve member 10 adjacent the roll of packaging material 6.
As shown in Figure 3, the plug member 14 has a body portion 26 and a flange 28. The body portion 26 defines a recess 30. The flange 28 is sufficiently large that it abuts against adjacent ends of both the support member 4 and the sleeve member 10 as can best be seen in
Figure 2. The plug member 14 is a moulded plug member 14 which is made of polyethylene.
As can be seen from Figure 3, the plug member 14 has friction-giving means in the form of three circumferential thin rings 32. These rings 32 grip on the inside of the support member 4 when the plug member 14 is pushed into the support member 4.
The roll of packaging material 6 is wound directly onto the first part 8 of the support member 4. The roll of packaging material 6 tightly grips the first part 8 and thus the roll of packaging material 6 is fixed with the support member 4 and cannot rotate relative to it.
The packaging material in the roll of packaging material 6 is preferably plastics film, for example that known as cling film.
The packaging applicator 2 shown in the drawings provides an easy and convenient way of using the roll of packaging material 6. Still further, the packaging applicator 2 can be economically produced and easily manufactured. Thus, for example, the plug member 14 provides an easy and convenient way of locating the sleeve member in position on the support member.
It is to be appreciated that the embodiment of the invention described above with reference to the accompanying drawings has been given by way of example only and that modifications may be effected. Thus, for example, the roll of packaging material 6 can be of any appropriate material and of any appropriate width and thickness. The plug member 14 may be of a design other than that shown in the drawings.
