Abstract
A kerb for roads adapted to protect communications/data and/or power cables, includes ductings 2 which may be formed or re-inforced by a duct lining 3 made from material of a different composition to that of the main body of the kerb itself. The body of the kerb 1 may be changed in shape to allow the inclusion of extra ducts or ducts of larger cross-sectional areas.
Description
A KERB FOR ROADS ADAPTED TO PROTECT COMMUNICATIONS/DATA AND POWER
CABLES.
THIS INVENTION RELATES TO A KERB FOR ROADS ADAPTED TO CARRY AND
PROVIDE MECHANICAL PROTECTION FOR COMMUNICATIONS/DATA AND/OR POWER
CABLES.
AT PRESENT THE INSTALLATION OF POWER AND COMMUNICATIONS/DATA CABLES
BETWEEN SERVICE USERS CAN INVOLVE EXCAVATION ALONG ROADS AND
PAVEMENTS TO ALLOW CABLES TO BE BURIED AND PROTECTED UNDERGROUND.
THIS METHOD OF INSTALLATION CAN BE EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE AND CAN
CAUSE EXTENSIVE DISRUPTION TO PEDESTRIANS AND ROAD USERS.
AN ALTERNATIVE METHOD OF INSTALLATION MAY BE PROVIDED BY
UTILISATION OF A KERB SPECIALLY ADAPTED TO CARRY AND MECHANICALLY
PROTECT SERVICE CABLES.
A KERB FOR ROADS ADAPTED TO INCLUDE ONE OR MORE CAVITIES RUNNING
THROUGHOUT THE LENGTH OF THE KERB TO ACT AS A DUCTING TO CARRY AND
PROVIDE MECHANICAL PROTECTION FOR COMMUNICATIONS/DATA AND/OR POWER
CABLES. THE BODY OF THE KERB MAY BE PRODUCED IN DIFFERENT SHAPES
TO ALLOW INCLUSION OF EXTRA DUCTS OR DUCTS OF LARGER CROSS
SECTIONAL AREAS, OR ALTERNATIVELY THE SHAPE OF THE BODY OF THE KERB
MAY NEED TO BE CHANGED TO ALLOW THE KERB TO NEGOTIATE BENDS,
CORNERS AND DRIVEWAYS. THE DUCTINGS SET WITHIN THE KERB MAY BE
FORMED OR RE-INFORCED BY A LINING OF MATERIAL OF DIFFERENT
COMPOSITION TO THAT OF THE MAIN BODY OF THE KERB ITSELF.
THE KERB MAY INCLUDE A TONGUE AND GROOVE TYPE LOCATING ARRANGEMENT
AT OPPOSITE ENDS OF THE KERB TO ALLOW CORRECT ALIGNMENT OF THE
DUCTINGS.
A SPECIFIC EMBODIMENT OF THE INVENTION WILL NOW BE DESCRIBED BY WAY
OF EXAMPLE WITH REFERENCE TO THE ACCOMPANYING DRAWING IN WHICH:
FIGURE 1 SHOWS IN CROSS-SECTION THE KERB AND AN EXAMPLE OF THE
DUCTING DETAIL.
FIGURE 2 SHOWS IN CROSS-SECTION THE KERB AND AN EXAMPLE OF THE
DUCTING RE-INFORCEMENT/DUCT FORMING, LINING DETAIL.
FIGURE 3 SHOWS IN CROSS-SECTION THE KERB AND AN EXAMPLE OF THE WAY
THAT THE SHAPE OF THE BODY OF THE KERB MAY BE CHANGED TO ALLOW THE
INCLUSION OF EXTRA DUCTS OR DUCTS OF LARGER CROSS-SECTIONAL AREAS.
FIGURE 4 SHOWS IN CROSS-SECTION THE KERB COMBINING ALL THE MAIN
TECHNICAL FEATURES AND SHOWING AN EXAMPLE OF HOW IT MAY LOOK 'IN
SITU'.
REFERRING TO THE DRAWING THE ADAPTED KERB INCLUDES ONE OR MORE
DUCTS 2 TO CARRY AND PROVIDE MECHANICAL PROTECTION FOR
COMMUNICATIONS/DATA AND POWER CABLES.
THE BODY OF THE KERB MAY BE CHANGED IN SHAPE AS SHOWN IN FIGURES 3 AND 4 TO ALLOW THE INCLUSION OF EXTRA DUCTS OR DUCTS OF LARGER
CROSS-SECTIONAL AREAS.
THE DUCTINGS 2 MAY BE FORMED OR RE-INFORCED WITH A LINING 3 OF
MATERIAL OF DIFFERENT COMPOSITION TO THAT OF THE MAIN BODY OF THE
KERB ITSELF.
FIGURE 4 SHOWS THE KERB 'IN SITU' LAID BETWEEN THE ROAD SURFACE 4
AND THE PAVING FLAGS 5 PROVIDING AN ALTERNATIVE METHOD OF PROVIDING
MECHANICAL PROTECTION FOR COMMUNICATIONS/DATA AND/OR POWER CABLES.
