Description
Cover for a display
The present invention relates to a cover for a display in an optical indicating device in communication terminals, in particular mobile communication devices, in which the display is disposed inside a housing at a specific distance below a recess in the housing wall.
The user-friendliness of a communication terminal depends on the quality of the interface between the person and the device. One of the most important elements in this connection is the LCD display. This helps the user during operation by appropriate operating instructions being displayed visually.
Between the LCD display and the user there is a window or a cover. This cover has both a design and a protective function. Transparent glass or plastic discs are used as covers, of varying thickness but uniform over the whole surface. Because of design-related features and/or the existing structural concept, the distance between the LCD display and the cover seems too large in the case of covers in general use so that the user gets the impression of having to look into a deep hole. This tends to cause difficulties in viewing the display from an oblique angle for example.
It is the aim of the present invention to provide a cover for a display in an optical indicating device of the above type, in which the above-described effect is prevented.
In a cover of the above type this is achieved by the inside of the cover facing the display forming a flat surface, whilst the outside of the cover facing the viewer forms a convex surface.
In this way a lens function is integrated into the display cover, which visually reduces the distance between the LCD display and cover for the user. At the same time, the cover of the invention assists lateral reading of the display.
Preferred developments of the present invention are characterised in that the dimensions of the cover are greater than the dimension of the recess, and in that the edge areas of the flat surface are on inner support surfaces connected to the housing wall, and the edges of the surface seal with the edges of the housing surface constraining the outer section, or in that the outer convex surface lying over the recess has relatively large radii of curvature whilst the edge areas of the outer convex surface have relatively small radii of curvature. Therefore, apart from a substantial improvement in the visual relationships for the user there is the possibility of great freedom of design.
For a better understanding of the invention and to show how the same may be carried into effect reference will now be made purely by way of example to the accompanying drawings.
These show:
Fig. 1 a plan view of a cover of the invention,
Fig. 2 a side view of the cover of the invention
shown in Fig. 1,
Fig. 3 a front view of the cover of the invention
shown in Fig. 1,
Fig. 4 a plan view of a mobile communication device
in which the cover of the invention is used.
Figs. 1 to 3 show three views of a cover 1 which is constructed in accordance with an embodiment of the present invention. The outer contour of the cover 1 is not essential to the invention and is only selected here because it is adapted to the exemplary embodiment shown in Fig. 4.
In Fig. 1 the area of the recess, limited by the dashed line, is referenced 2. The actual LCD display is located below the recess 2 inside the housing of a mobile communication device 5. The cover 1 of the invention has a flat surface 3 as an inner side and a convex surface 4 as an outer side.
In the illustrated exemplary embodiment of a cover 1 of the invention it is assumed that the dimensions of the cover 1 are greater than the dimensions of the recess 2. This may be desirable because of the design-related features but is not essential. In this embodiment the edge area is simply used to seal the convex outer surface of the cover 1 flush with the housing surface. When considering the construction of such a cover, care should be taken that the convex surface 4 of the cover 1 lying over the recess 2 has a relatively large radius of curvature whereas the edge areas of the outer convex surface 4 may have relatively small radii of curvature to make possible the smooth transition to the surface of the housing.
Due to the fact that smaller radii of curvature are used in the outer region, and that therefore there is a larger refractive index, the cover 1 of the invention aids lateral reading of the display.
Fig. 4 shows the plan view of a mobile communication device (Handy) in which the cover of the invention, which has been described in Figs. 1 to 3, is used above a recess 2.
As already mentioned at the start, the cover is usually made of transparent plastics, such as plexiglass (PMMA), for instance. However, it can also be made of polycarbonate, for instance.
