Abstract

A grease gun comprises a cylinder 2 with holes 4 through which grease is sucked into the cylinder from a reservoir 7 during a spring powered suction stroke of a piston 1. To perform a delivery stroke, pressurised fluid is applied to the piston through an orifice 8 whereby the piston moves to cover the holes and eject grease through a pipe 9. Due to the spread of the holes 4 in the base 10 the grease is drawn down the reservoir 7 in an even manner making the grease level easily visible. The stroke of the piston 1 causes an initial increases in pressure in the cylinder, the pressure being further increased by the action of a cavity 6 in the piston covering an end plug 3. It is possible to pump a known quantity of grease and a variety of other viscous and semi-viscous fluids.

Description

5E PIWP This invention relates to a grease pump.
Grease pumps are well known pieces of equipment used on a variety of vehicles and machines to lubricate moving parts via pipes and metering devices. The pump is usually connected to a power source which is switched 'on' and 'off' by a timer which is set to suit particular applications. The pump can also be operated by hand if required.
According to the present invention, a grease pump is provided which is positively self charging by suction, delivers a known quantity of grease at every stroke of the piston and draws the grease down the reservoir in an even manner. Other viscous and semi-viscous fluids can be used in the pump instead of grease.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which Fig. 1 shows the pump in the rest position, Fig. 2 shows the pump with the piston at full stroke.
Referring to the drawings:1. When pressure is applied on piston 1 through orifice 8, piston 1 travels through housing 2, shutting off holes 4 and covering end plug 3 with cavity 6 as shown in Fig. 2.
2. When pressure is removed from orifice 8, piston 1 is returned to its rest position by force exerted on it from spring 5 as shown in Fig. 1 and drawing grease into housing 2 through holes 4 from reservoir 7.
3. When pressure is again applied to piston 1 through orifice 8, piston 1 travels through housing 2 shutting off holes 4 pressurising the grease inside the housing which is amplified by end plug 3 and the grease is ejected under pressure through the pipe 9 as shown in Fig. 2.
This being the function of the pump.

ClAIMS
1. A grease pump that positively recharges itself by suction, amplifies the grease pressure within itself twofold (i) by piston 1, and (ii) by the interaction between cavity 6 and end plug 3, and draws the grease down the reservoir in an even manner.
2. A grease pump as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the grease is sucked evenly into the housing 2 through the pattern of holes 4 in base 10 which ensures that the grease in clear reservoir 7 descends evenly and can be observed easily.
3. A grease pump as claimed in Claim 1 which delivers a measured quantity of grease which is determined by the internal dimensions of housing 2, cavity 6 and the size of end plug 3 and piston 1.
4. A grease pump as claimed in Claim 1, Claim 2 and Claim 3 can be used for other viscous and semi-viscous fluids instead of grease.
5. A grease pump as claimed in Claim 1, Claim 2, Claim 3 and Claim 4 substantially as described herein with reference to Fig. 1 and Fig.2 of the accompanying drawings.
