Description
An arranvement for connecting a wire cable
to a vertical post or similar suPportinq part The present invention relates to an arrangement for connecting a wire cable to a vertical post or similar supporting part at an angle deviating from 90 , comprising a connecting terminal which has a threaded bolt and which in use is attached to a wire cable, the connecting terminal being in use located in an inclined bore of the post or similar supporting part; an adapter which in use is located on the free end of the threaded bolt that protrudes from the post or similar supporting part and which has a bearing face configured to face the post or similar supporting part and an end face directed orthogonally to the threaded bolt; and a threaded nut which in use is screwed onto the threaded bolt and supported at the orthogonal end face of the adapter, maintaining the bearing face of the adapter against the surface of the post or similar supporting element.
Such arrangements are known from the prior art. In those known arrangements the adapter is a tubular element, one end face of which is orthogonal and the other end face of which is chamfered at a fixed angle. Depending upon whether the post or supporting part is of the type having a plane supporting face, or a rounded bearing face, for example in the case of a post having a circular cross section, the corresponding bearing face of the adapter is not only angled according to the desired angular position of the wire cable in relation to the post, but the bearing face may also be recessed to conform to the shape of the post.
With such arrangements it is necessary to provide a different adapter for each required angular position.
Usually, adapters are fabricated to have 5 degree increments in the angle of the inclined face. This use of different adapters to vary the angle of tensioning cables from posts in balustrades or the like, necessitates the manufacture and storage of many adapters which requires an expensive inventory of a large number of adapters.
Proceeding from this prior art, the aim of the present invention is to create an arrangement of a generic type which enables the connection of wire cables to posts in any angular position with considerably less expenditure on storage and manufacture.
Accordingly, the present invention provides an arrangement for connecting a wire cable to a vertical post or similar supporting part at an angle deviating from 900, comprising a connecting terminal which has a threaded connecting bolt and which in use is attached to a wire cable, the connecting terminal being disposed in use in a bore of the post or similar supporting part; an adapter which in use is located on the free end of the threaded bolt that protrudes from the post or similar supporting part, said adapter having a bearing face configured face to the post or supporting part and an end face directed orthogonally to the threaded bolt, said bearing face being inclined at an angle deviating from 0 and 900 in relation to the end face of the adapter and the inner side of the inclined face being recessed in the manner of a spherical segment; an annular disk disposed in use between the inclined face of the adapter and the bearing face of the post or similar supporting part, the throughhole of said disk having a dimension greater than that of the threaded bolt of the connecting terminal and the through-bore of the adapter, the face of the annular disk directed towards the adapter having a convex spherical surface which corresponds to the shape of the spherical segment of the inclined face of the adapter and the face of the annular disk directed towards the bearing face of the post being correspondingly formed with a concave spherical surface, such that the annular disk can be disposed at varying angular positions in relation to the adapter and the connecting terminal; and a threaded nut which in use is screwed onto the threaded bolt and supported at the orthogonal end face of the adapter maintaining the bearing face of the adapter against the surface of the post or similar supporting element.
In a manner known per se the connecting terminal is preferably provided with keying faces.
In the arrangement of the present invention, by constructing the bearing face of the adapter in the manner of a spherical segment or the like, and by the provision of an annular disk, the end faces of which are respectively convex and concave corresponding to the shape of the spherical segment, it is possible, with one and the same adapter, to vary the angular position of the wire cable in relation to a supporting part. This is possible because the adapter can be disposed in different angular positions relative to the annular disk. Further, in this invention, by virtue of the relatively large opening in the annular disk, the movement of the connecting terminal to different angular positions is not hindered. In addition, by virtue of the fact that the annular disk is recessed on the end face which is located against a post, a clearance is provided for the movement of the connecting terminal when it is moved together with the adapter to a different angular position in relation to the annular disk.
With the arrangement of the present invention expenditure on storage is considerably reduced since many different angular positions can be achieved with a single adapter and associated annular disk. Depending upon whether the post or supporting part has a two-dimensional plane abutment, as, for example, in the case of a tube having a square or rectangular cross section, or a circular cross section, the annular disk is constructed accordingly. In the case of round posts or the like, the annular disk has to be recessed or rounded corresponding to the rounding of the post or other supporting part transversally to its centre axis.
All parts of the arrangement are preferably made from highgrade steel. The keying faces provided on the connecting terminal serve as an application point for a tool, e.g.
spanner, so that the connecting terminal can be nonrotatably retained when screwing a nut onto the threaded bolt.
A preferred embodiment of the present invention will now be described hereinbelow by way of example only with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows end and side views of an annular disk of the
arrangement of Figure 3;
Figure 2 shows end and side views of an adapter of the
arrangement of Figure 3; and
Figure 3 shows an arrangement in accordance with a
preferred embodiment of the present invention
disposed at a vertical post.
An arrangement for connecting a wire cable 1 with a vertical post 14 at an angle deviating from 900 in accordance with a preferred embodiment of the present invention is shown in
Figure 3. A connecting terminal 2 which has a threaded connecting bolt 3 is attached in a conventional manner to the wire cable 1, and the threaded bolt 3 of the terminal 2 passes through a corresponding inclined bore 4 in the post 14. An adapter 5 which has a bearing face configured to face the post 14 and an end face 6 directed orthogonally to the threaded bolt 3 is located on the end of the threaded bolt 3 remote from the wire cable 1 and protruding from the post 14. A threaded nut 7 is screwed onto the threaded bolt 3. In the set position the threaded nut 7 is supported at the orthogonal end face 6 of the adapter 5, while the bearing face of the adapter 5 is supported at the post 14.
In accordance with the invention the end of the adapter 5 facing towards the surface of the post 14 is provided with an inclined face 8 which extends at an angle deviating from 0 and 900 in relation to the orthogonal end face 6 of the adapter. The inclined face 8 is preferably substantially acutely angled. The inner side of the inclined face 8 is recessed in the manner of a spherical segment 9. The shape of the spherical segment 9 is shown clearly in Figure 3.
An annular disk 10 is disposed between the spherically constructed inclined face 8 of the adapter 5 and the corresponding bearing face of the post 14, the through-hole 11 of the annular disk 10 having a diameter approximately twice that of both the diameter of the threaded bolt 3 of the terminal 2 and the through-bore 12 of the adapter 5. The face of the annular disk 10 turned towards the adapter 5 is spherically convex and is complementary to the shape of the spherical segment 9 of the inclined face 8. The face of the annular disk 10 located against the bearing face of the post 14 has a corresponding spherically concave surface, whereby a clearance is produced between the post 14 and the annular disk 10 as can be seen in particular from Figure 3.
The terminal 2 additionally comprises keying faces 13 in the vicinity of the threaded bolt projection, which faces 13 serve for the application of a spanner or the like.
The angular position of the connecting terminal 2 in relation to the post 14 can be adjusted to any desired angle. In Figure 3 one end position is shown. However, other angular positions may be attained in which the terminal 2 is to some degree swivelled in the anti-clockwise direction from that position shown in Figure 3. In that case appropriate holes 4 have of course to be formed in the post 14. Depending upon the angular position of the terminal 2, a different inclined position can be set, whereby a plurality of different angular positions can be achieved with the one and the same connection arrangement of the present invention.
It will be understood that the present invention is not restricted to the exemplified embodiment, but may be modified in many different ways within the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
