Abstract
A window shelf system for use in making a tiled window sill comprises a first strip member 38 securable to a window frame part 18, a tiling board 48 receivable along one edge by the first strip member, and a second strip member 50 for the opposite free edge of the tiling board, the second strip member having a lip or overhang 60 under which tiles 64 are fitted.
Description
TITLE: Windows
DESCRIPTION
This invention concerns windows.
An object of this invention is to provide a system to facilitate tiling of a window shelf.
According to the present invention there is provided a window shelf system for use in making a tiled window shelf comprising a first strip member securable to a window frame or part associated therewith, a tiling surface member such as a board, receivable along one edge by said first strip member and a second strip member locatable on an opposite edge of said tiling surface member, said second strip member having a lip or overhang under which tiles may be fitted.
The first strip member is preferably a plastics extrusion and is preferably securable to the window frame or a part associated therewith, such as a sill member, by means of screws. The preferred first strip member has a wall which may abut against the window frame or a part associated therewith and through which screws may be driven to secure the wall to the frame or associated part. Extending from the wall there is preferably a channel which can receive an edge of the tiling surface member, especially board. The channel preferably extends from a lower part of the wall, in use. The channel preferably has internal side walls that are profiled to provide grip on the tiling surface member, such as by means of ribbing or the like.
The tiling surface member is preferably in the form of a board, which may be of any suitable material such as medium density fibreboard or particle board.
Preferably the board is of moisture resistant material or is treated to be moisture resistant.
The second strip member is also preferably a plastics extrusion. The second strip member preferably has a wall that has an outer curved shape to give a smooth and pleasing appearance. Extending from the wall is preferably a channel into which an opposite edge of the tiling surface member can fit. The channel preferably has internal side walls that are profiled to provide grip on the tiling surface member, such as by ribbing or the like.
At its upper edge the wall is turned over to provide a lip spaced from the upper channel side wall sufficiently for a tile to be adhered onto the tiling surface member and fit under the lip. The wall of the second strip member preferably extends below the lower channel side wall.
In use the first strip member is secured to the window frame or associated part, one edge of the tiling surface member or board is fitted to the first strip member and the second strip member is fitted onto the opposite edge of the tiling surface member or board.
Then ceramic tile adhesive can be applied to the tiling surface member or board and ceramic tiles placed thereon to produce a tiled window shelf. Tiles will have one edge under the lip of the second strip member. Finally, if desired a strip of sealant, such as of silicone, may be applied to the junction of tiles with the window frame.
This invention will now be further described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing, which is a section through a window system.
Referring to the accompanying drawing, there is shown a window 10 fitted in an opening in a cavity wall 12 having an outer brick course 14 and an inner breeze block course 16. On the brick course 14 sits a window sill 18. The window sill 18 is a ducted plastic extrusion and has a base wall 20, a top wall 22 and a rear wall 24. The top wall 22 has a first part 26 extending from its junction with the rear wall 24 and second part 28 which slopes downwards and is bent over at its outer end to meet the base wall 20, itself bent over, to form a lip 30. The lip is provided so that water landing on the sill will travel down its slope and drop from the lip rather than travel back along the underside of the sill, which would otherwise cause damp penetration between the sill and the wall.
On the first part 26 of the sill sits a window frame 32 fitted with a double glazed unit 34.
Fixed to the rear wall 24 of the sill by means of a screw 36 is an extrusion 38. The extrusion 38 has an
F-cross section and is fitted orientated through 1800.
The extrusion has a wall 40 and extending therefrom at right angles a pair of spaced, parallel walls 42 and 44 forming a channel 46 therebetween. The lower wall 42 is serrated in profile on its inner surface and the upper wall 44 is serrated in profile on both sides.
A composite moisture resistant particle window board 48 is fitted into the channel 46 along one edge lies on top of the breeze block course 16. The opposite edge of the board 48 has an extrusion 50 fitted thereto. The extrusion 50 has a shaped wall 52 and a pair of spaced parallel walls 54 and 56 extending therefrom to form a channel 58 into which the edge of the board 48 fits. The lower wall 54 has a serrated profile on its inner face and the upper wall 56 is serrated in profile on both faces. The shaped wall 52 has a gently curved profile leading to a returned top edge 60.
On top of the window board 48 a layer of ceramic tile adhesive 62 has been applied and on the adhesive 62 ceramic tiles 64 have been laid. The ceramic tiles 64 are laid with one edge under the returned top edge 60 of the extrusion 50.
To complete the installation, a bead of sealant 66, such as of silicone, is applied to seal the junction of the ceramic tiles and the window frame.
