Abstract

A glazing pane or unit 28 is retained in a rebated frame 10 by one or more clips 20 along each edge, each clip having a first arm 22 held in a groove in the frame, and a second arm 26 engaging the pane or unit 28, and having a channel formation 32 for locating a fillet 34, e.g. a plastics strip. A decorative heading 40 is attached to the pane or unit, and optionally the frame, via double-sided adhesive tape. <IMAGE>

Description

GLAZING This invention relates to the glazing of, for example, a frame of a window or door.
Conventionally, a pane of glass, which may be a single or a double, i.e. two parallelspaced sheets of glass, is fitted into a rebate member extending around the interior of a frame which is to be glazed. The pane is seated in the rebate, with appropriate seals as required, and then is maintained in the desired position by beading, usuaily of timber, which is positioned to extend around the frame in abutment with the exterior face of the pane. The beading has to be screwed into place so as to form a secure retaining means for the pane.
The glazing of a frame is, therefore, a time-consuming, labour-intensive operation.
It is one object of the invention to improve the glazing operation. It is another object of the invention to provide a means of glazing in which the beading can be chosen for its decorative or cosmetic effect in addition or instead of just for its functional, glass-retaining effect.
Accordingly, in one aspect the invention provides a glazed frame, the frame having a rebate member to receive a glazing pane, the base of the rebate having a longitudinally-extending groove, a clip member having a first arm received in the groove and a second arm the end of which presses against the exterior surface of the pane, the clip member being shaped to provide a channel between it and the exterior of the pane, a fillet member inserted in the channel to urge the pane into the rebate, and a beading member extending around and attached to the frame and overlying the otherwise exposed portion of the clip.
In another aspect the invention provides a kit of parts for the glazing of a frame, the frame having a rebate to receive a glazing pane and the rebate having a longitudinally-extending groove, the kit comprising clip means and a fillet member, the clip means having a first arm to fit in the groove and a second arm the end of which is to press against the exterior of a pane of glass which lies in the rebate, the clip member being shaped to provide a channel between it and the pane, and the fillet being adapted to be inserted in the channel thereby to urge the pane inwardly into the rebate. The kit may optionally include a beading member to extend around and be attached to the frame and to overlie the otherwise exposed portion of the clip and to contact the pane.
The beading may be attached to both the frame and the pane, preferably by adhesive means. For example, double-sided adhesive tape may conveniently be used to attach the beading to the pane. The same means or proprietary adhesives may be used to attach the beading to the frame. Thus, by the means of the invention, there is no need to use screws or other mechanical fixings to attach the beading as the pane is retained in place by the clip and fillet combination. Hence the beading can be chosen for purely cosmetic or aesthetic reasons to improve the appearance of the glazed frame.
The invention will be further described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawing which is a transverse section through a glazed frame of the invention.
A window frame 10 comprises a wooden frame member 12 to which is attached a plastics extrusion 14. (Member 12 and extrusion 14 are co-extensive along each side of a conventional rectangular opening in a wall of a building to define a rectangular frame to be glazed.) A rebate 16 is defined between member 12 and extrusion 14, the rebate being towards the inside of the frame, i.e. towards the interior rather than the exterior of the building. The rebate is generally flat-bottomed but stepped at 16a, 16b and includes a longitudinally-extending groove 18.
A clip 20 has first and second arm portions 22, 24. The first arm portion 22 is to be received in and fitted securely into groove 18. The clip 20 then extends outwardly along base 1 6b of the rebate and then upwardly by means of the second arm portion 24. Arm portion 24 has an end portion 26 at right angles to the upwardlyextending portion 24, the end portion 26 extending inwardly towards a pane of glass 28 sitting in the rebate of the frame.
As shown, the pane comprises two parallel, spaced panes 28a, 28b, the inner pane 28b being engaged with an upstanding wall 14a of extension 14 with a longitudinally-extending seal 30 in between.
The shaped clip 20 defines a channel 32 between itself and outer pane 28a. This channel receives a fillet 34, which may be for example a plastic strip, which urges pane 28 inwards against seal 30. The pane is thereby securely held in the rebate.
A decorative glazing bead 36, which is preferably of timber, is attached to pane 28a and optionally to frame member 12 by double-sided adhesive tape 38. Glazing bead 36 is of generally L-shape so as to overlie and hide the exposed portion of clip 20 and has decorative flutings 40 or other cosmetic features, as desired.
It is not essential that the clip extend for the full length of each side of the rectangular frame and, if desired, a plurality of shorter clips couid be utilised on each side. The fillet similarly need not extend for the full length of each side of the rectangular frame. For example 50mm lengths of fillet positioned at suitable intervals depending the frame size may be employed. The invention is capable of variation, for example: It may not be essential to provide the clip means on all four sides of the rectangular frame and clips along two opposed sides may be satisfactory. The frame need not be rectangular and the invention is applied to other shapes of window frame. Where double-sided adhesive tape is used to adhere the beading, it may for example be a waterproof coated foam tape which could typically be, say, 12mm wide and 0.8mm thick and coated with an acrylic adhesive.
