Abstract
An anchor bolt 10 is split longitudinally into two parts 10a,10b. Each part 10a,10b has a first externally threaded portion 14a,14b and a second transversely extending head portion 16a,16b. The head portions 16a,16b of each part 10a,10b can be individually passed through to the blind side of a hole and manoeuvred so that they bear against a surface 17 on the blind side and the two parts 10a,10b abut each other so as to form a single bolt. A washer 11 (or washers 11,12) is passed over the shank to hold it in place and a nut 13 engages the shank.
Description
A FASTENER
This invention relates to a fastener and more particularly, but not exclusively, to a fastener which can be anchored in a blind hole such as may be provided in tubular structures.
According to the present invention there is provided a fastener comprising a two part externally screw-threaded stud and a nut for threaded engagement with the stud, each part of the stud having a first portion defining a part only of the circumferential extent of the screw-thread and a second portion extending transversely of the first portion for bearing against a surface of an item to which the fastener is to be secured.
Preferably, each part of the stud defines a half or substantially a half of the circumferential extent of the screw-thread. In this case, the first portion of each stud is, preferably, substantially semi-cylindrical.
Preferably, the fastener also comprises a retaining device, e.g. a plastics washer, for holding the two parts together prior to engagement of the nut with the thread on the stud. The fastener may also include a metal washer.
The invention will now be more particularly described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a side view of one embodiment of a fastener according to the invention, and
Figure 2 is an end view of the fastener shown in Figure 1.
Referring now to the drawings, the fastener shown therein comprises a twopart externally threaded stud 10, a plastics washer 11, a metal washer 12 and an internally threaded hexagonal nut 13.
The two parts of the stud are indicated by reference numbers 10i! and lOb and each part IOar, 10h has a first portion 14a, 14k defining a part only of the circumferential extent of the screw-thread 15 and a second portion 16a, 16k extending transversely to the first portion 14a, 14k.
Ideally and as shown, each first portion 14i, 14k is semi-cylindrical and defines a half of the circumferential extent of the screw-thread
The two part stud may be formed by talking a one-piece threaded stud and splitting it in two in a plane parallel to the axis of the stud and then bending one end of each part into the shape of a "U".
The stud 10 can be installed in a blind hole such as may be provided in a tubular structure 17, e.g. in motor cycles, push-chairs, furniture or golf carts, by inserting each part of lOa, lOb of the stud into the hole separately. The plastics washer 11 may then be placed over the two parts of the stud 10 to hold the two parts together prior to fitting the metal washer 12 and the nut 13.
The fastener could also be secured to panel board or the like.
Claims (7)
1. A fastener comprising a two part externally-screw threaded stud and a nut for threaded engagement with the stud, each part of the stud having a first portion defining a part only of the circumferential extent of the screw-thread and a second portion extending transversely of the first portion for bearing against a surface of an item to which the fastener is to be secured.
2. A fastener as claimed in claim 1, wherein each part of the stud defines a half or substantially a half of the circumferential extent of the screw-thread.
3. A fastener as claimed in claim 2, wherein the first portion of each stud is substantially semi-cylindrical.
4. A fastener as claimed in any one of the preceding claims, further comprising a retaining device, for holding the two parts together prior to engagement of the nut with the thread on the stud.
5. A fastener as claimed in claim 4, wherein the retaining device is a plastics washer.
6. A fastener as claimed in claim 4 or claim 5, further including a metal washer.
7. A fastener substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
