Abstract
In order to hold a thin secondary component 4 at a distance from a workpiece 3, a hollow cylindrical spacer 10 is clamped by its internal flange 12 against the workpiece 3 by the flange 6 of a blind rivet nut 1 set in a hole in the workpiece 3 by forming an expanded portion 16. The secondary component 4 is then secured to the workpiece 3 by means of screwthreaded fastener (not shown) passing through the hole 14 and the spacer 10 into engagement with the screwthreaded bore 8.
Description
IMPROVED THREADED BLIND NUT ASSEMBLY
This invention relates to an improved blind fastener assembly, in particular to an improved threaded blind nut assembly.
Threaded blind fasteners are used to provide an anchorage point in a hole in a workpiece, typically a sheet body, access to the workpiece only being available from one side. The side to which there is no access being the 'blind' side. Many such fasteners are known in the art, as are tools for setting them.
Such threaded blind fasteners have a flange on the operator's side of the fastener which prevents the fastener from being pushed through the workpiece, and a thread by which a further component can be attached to the workpiece.
However, such fasteners are not suitable for some applications. For example, where a secondary component is particularly thin, and is to be held at a distance from the workpiece. There is a danger of the secondary component deforming as a threaded member such as a bolt is tightened up to secure the workpiece and the secondary component together.
The present invention provides a solution to this problem.
According to the present invention, a threaded blind rivet assembly comprises a rivet nut and a spacer,
the rivet nut comprising a shank with a flange at one end and a bore being proved at least along a portion of its length with a threaded region, and
the spacer comprising a unitary body having a substantially uniform external diameter, a through bore and an inwardly directed flange.
In use, the shank of the rivet nut passes through the bore of the spacer, the flange of the rivet nut abutting the flange of the spacer, such that on setting of the rivet nut the flange of the spacer is sandwiched between the flange of the rivet nut and a workpiece.
The invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which Eigure 1 shows an assembly according to the present invention.
Referring to the Figure, there is shown a rivet nut 1 and a spacer 2, in which the rivet nut has been secured to a workpiece 3.
The rivet nut comprises a shank 5 of substantially uniform external diameter, and a flange 6 of greater diameter. The shank is provided with a through bore having two portions. A first 7, of greater internal diameter extends from the flange into the rivet nut. The second 8 of lesser internal diameter extends from an end of the rivet nut remote from the flange into the rivet nut. The second portion 8 of the bore is provided along at least part of its length with a thread.
The spacer 2 comprises a unitary body 10 of substantially uniform external diameter, having a through bore 11. The bore is of substantially uniform diameter save for an internally directed flange 12 at one end. The internal diameter of the flange 12 is just sufficiently large to allow the shank 5 of the rivet nut 1 to pass through.
The spacer 2 may be formed by casting, machining or by any other suitable method of any suitable material.
The rivet but 1 is set in the normal manner, the first portion 7 of the through bore being weaker than the second portion 8, it deforms to form an expanded portion 16 on the blind side of the workpiece. In this way the flange 12 of the spacer and the workpiece 3 are held between the flange 6 of the rivet nut and the expanded portion 16.
A secondary component 4 may then be secured to the workpiece by a headed threaded fastener (not shown) passing though a hole 14 in the secondary component, the through bore of the spacer, and engaging the threaded portion of the rivet nut 1.
Claims (2)
