Abstract

A safety catch comprises a catch member 5, for attachment to a fixed side wall 1, and a latch member 8 which terminates in a retaining flange 13 which, when the latch member is fixed to a moveable member such as a door or drawer, engages over an edge of the movable member. The catch and latch members 5,8 are provided with cooperating oblique lips 7,9 interengagable after the door or drawer has been partly opened in the direction of the arrow 3, sufficient for an adult to insert a finger to flex a part 11 of the latch member 8 to disengage the lips. The members 5,8 can be attached using adhesive, and the latch can be attached to embrace the bottom of a door as well as the side.

Description

Safety catch The invention relates to a safety catch of the kind used on doors and drawers to prevent opening by young children but permit deliberate opening when manipulated by an adult more dextrous than a child.
A safety catch according to the present invention comprises a catch member attachable to a fixed item such as a fixed part of an article of furniture or a doorpost, and a latch member attachable to a movable item such as a door or drawer that is to be prevented from opening by a child, the latch and catch members being provided with co-operating oblique lips which interengage after the movable member has been opened a fraction sufficient for an adult to insert a finger to flex the latch member out of the way, wherein the latch member terminates in a retaining flange which, when the latch member is in place on the movable member, engages over an edge of the movable member.
An example of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying diagrammatic drawing in which the single figure is a sectional fragmentary view of a cupboard showing the safety catch in side elevation.
The illustrated cupboard comprises a fixed side wall 1 and a movable door 2 which, if the safety catch of the invention were not in place, would be freely openable by swinging in the direction of the arrow 3.
The safety catch comprises a catch member 5 having a plate 4 which is secured to the inside of the wall 1 and is flanged at one end 6 to engage over an edge of the wall 1. The plate 4 carries an upstanding oblique tongue or lip 7 for engagement by the oblique tongue or lip 9 at one end ofa curved plate 1 1 of a latch member 8. The plate 7 1 upstands from a mounting plate 12 secured to the inside of the door 2. The mounting plate 12 terminates in a retaining flange 13 which engages over a side edge of the door 2. Preferably, the flange 13 carries a return flange 14 to define a channel together with the flange 13.
lt will be apparent that, after the door has been swung open a fraction in the direction of the arrow 3, the lips 7 and 9 in teren gage and prevent further opening, unless the finger of an adult person has been inserted to flex the plate 1 1 away before the lips internngage.
The obliqueness of the lips 7, 9 and the curvature of the plate 11 have the effect that, if a child were to try to force the door open, the relevant parts of the safety catch are stressed in shear in a direction parallel to the door 2. Consequently, it will be quite safe to use adhesive for securing the latch and catch members in place because adhesive is exceptionally strong in shear and therefore there is no danger of either member becoming detached by peeling away under a force that can even be exerted by a child.
In an alternative construction (not illustrated), the parts are locared so that the channel of the latch member embraces the bottom edge of rhe door instead of the side. In that event, the channel is slotted to receive a baseplate to which the latch member is attached, it then being possible to hold the channel to the door by a single screw from the inside of the cupboard.
In the illustrated version, the latch member and catch member may be moulded in respectively one piece from plastics material.

A safety catch for preventing opening of a door or drawer of an article by young children but permitting deliberate opening when manipulated by a more dextrous adult, comprising a catch member for attachment ro a fixed part of the article and a latch member for attachment to the door or drawer, the catch and latch members being provided with co-operating oblique lips interengagable after the door or drawer has been opened a fraction sufficient for an adult to insert a finger to flex part of the latch member out of the way, wherein the latch member terminates in a retaining flange which, when the latch member is in place on the door or drawer, engages over an edge of the door or drawer.
2. A safety catch according to Claim 1, wherein the flexible part of the latch member is a curved plate upstanding from a mounting plate and carrying the oblique lip.
3. A safety catch according to Claim 2, wherein the retaining flange is provided on the mounting plate.
4. A safety catch according to Claim 3, wherein rhe retaining flange carries a return flange to define a channel together with the mounting plate and retaining flange.
5. A safety catch according to any preceding claim, wherein the latch and catch members are moulded in respectively one piece from plastics material.
6. A safety catch substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
7. An article of furniture having a door or drawer and a safety catch according to any preceding claim attached to it by adhesive.
