Abstract

229,767. Avery, Ltd., W. & T., and Sykes, C. M. Dec. 1, 1923. Pendulum - weight apparatus; steelyard apparatus.-The invention relates to the type of apparatus described in Specification 176,650 in which the load is initially automatically balanced by a spring which determines the position of an indicator utilized in connection with the positioning of the poise weight of the steelyard, the steelyard balancing the major order of the load, while a pendulous resistant automatically balances the minor order. The pointer 43 for indicating the minor order of weighment is fixed to a lever 38 which is connected to a motiondamping device 42 and which co-operates with an overbalanced lever 32 connected to the steelyard 13 through a rod 30. The steelyard is fulcrummed in a swinging shackle 23 and carries a pendulum 26. The load is applied through a connecting-rod 5 which is suspended from a lever 8 supported at one end by the steelyard 13 through a rod 10 and at the other by a shackle 14 from a lever 15 which is connected to a coil spring 18, the upper end of which is adjustably secured to the scale housing on a bell-crank lever 19. The initial application of the load causes the steelyard arm to be raised till it comes into contact with the upper stop 50, while the spring 18 is extended, causing the pointer 20, secured to the lever 15, to move over the scale 21, giving an indication of the position to which the poiseweight 22 is to be moved. The major order of the load is then balanced, the steelyard arm 13 falling under the action of the weight 26 and allowing the overbalanced lever 32 to fall about its pivot 32<a>. An extension 36 of the lever 32 bears against a pin 37 carried by the bifurcated lever 38 which carries pendulum weights 40 and the pointer 43, so that when a position of equilibrium is reached the pointer 43 indicates the minor order of the load on the scale 44. The spring 18 may be replaced by a pendulum or other automatic weight-balancing resistant. Stops 52 on the scale housing take excessive strain in the case of fracture of the mechanism.
