Abstract

A method of displaying the number of remaining record sheets in an image forming apparatus is disclosed. A message requesting the input of the number of record sheets is displayed when an enrolment key is operated, and subsequently the number is receiving from the facsimile operator and stored. The total number of record sheets is enrolled when the record sheets are supplied to a feed cassette of the apparatus. The printed record sheets are counted when a document is reproduced and the number of remaining record sheets is calculated by subtracting the number of printed record sheets from the said total number and displaying the number of remaining record sheets. An alarm indicating that record sheets should be supplied is generated if the said number of remaining record sheets is less than a preset number.

Description

DISPLAYING NUMBER OF REMAINING RECORD SHEETS IN A IMAGE FORMING APPARATUS The present invention relates to a method of identifying the remaining quantity of record sheets in image forming apparatus, e.g. a facsimile system, automatically and displaying the number of remaining record sheets.
In general, if there is no record sheet in a facsimile system, the facsimile system cannot receive a document. Therefore, the remaining quantity of record sheets should be checked. In a conventional facsimile, the remaining quantity is checked by opening the paper tray or using the transparent portion covering the record sheets. In such a facsimile system, if the record sheets run out, a message "no paper" is displayed on a display unit such as a liquid crystal display (LCD) or a light emitting diode (LED). However, even if only a few record sheets are left, the display indicates that paper is present. Thus, the record sheets may run short during use of the facsimile system, thereby preventing document reception.
To solve the above problem, it is an object of the present invention to provide an improved method of displaying the remaining quantity of record sheets.
Accordingly, the present invention provides a method of displaying the number of remaining record sheets in an image forming apparatus comprising the steps of: enroling the total number of record sheets when the record sheets are supplied to a feed cassette of the apparatus; counting the printed record sheets when a document is reproduced; calculating the number of remaining record sheets by subtracting the number of printed record sheets from the said total number and displaying the number of remaining record sheets.
The step of enroling the total number of record sheet preferably comprises the sub-steps of displaying a message requesting the input of the number of record sheets when an enrolment key is operated, and subsequently receiving and storing the said total number.
The step of enroling the total number of record sheets may further include the sub-step of displaying the said total number after it has been stored.
The step of calculating the number of remaining record sheets preferably includes the sub-step of generating an alarm indicating that record sheets should be supplied if the said number of remaining record sheets is less than a preset number.
The said number of remaining record sheets may be displayed in response to operation of a display key.
The present invention also extends to an image forming apparatus comprising: a key-pad for enroling a total number of record sheets; means for counting the printed record sheets when a document is reproduced; and means for calculating the number of remaining record sheets by subtracting the number of printed record sheets from the said total number and displaying the number of remaining record sheets.
The key-pad may include an enrolment key, and the apparatus may further including a display, means for displaying a message requesting the input of the number of record sheets when the enrolment key is operated and means for receiving a number via the said key-pad and storing the number as the said total number of record sheets.
Preferably, the apparatus includes means for displaying the said total number after it has been stored.
The apparatus may further include means for comparing the said number of remaining record sheets with a preset number and means for generating an alarm indicating that record sheets should be supplied if the said number of remaining record sheets is less than the preset number.
Preferably, the key-pad also includes a display key and the means for displaying the number of remaining record sheets is adapted to display the number in response to operation of the display key.
The image forming apparatus may be a facsimile.
The present invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings in which: FIG. 1 is a block diagram of a facsimile system according to the present invention; FIG. 2 is a flowchart illustrating the process of setting the number of record sheets according to the present invention; and FIG. 3 is a flowchart illustrating the process of displaying the number of remaining record sheets according to the present invention.
In FIG. 1, a central processing unit (CPU) 10 controls the number of remaining record sheets to be displayed by counting the number of printed pages of record sheets according to a predetermined program and also controls the printing of the displayed picture data in response to the input of received information or a copy key. An operating panel (OPE) 20 has a record sheet page input key and various function keys. If data is generated by operation of the keys, the key data is input to CPU 10, and the remaining number of record sheets is displayed under the control of CPU 10.
A memory 30 stores a program for displaying the number of remaining record sheets and received picture data, and the data is accessed or stored under the control of CPU 10. A scanner 40 scans the a document image, converts the picture into digital picture data to then supplies the converted data to CPU 10. A modem 50 analog-modulates and outputs transmitted data under the control of CPU 10 and demodulates and outputs received analog data. A network control unit (NCU) 60 operated by CPU 10 forms a communication loop with a telephone line and interfaces the signal from modem 50 with the signal of the telephone line. A printer 70 including a reception driving motor for moving a record sheet prints pictures on record sheets under the control of CPU 10. A sensor 80 detects whether record sheets are jammed or transferred and supplies the information to CPU 10.A speaker 90 generates an alarm under the control of CPU 10.
FIG. 2 is a flowchart illustrating the setting of the number of record sheets according to the present invention, in which record sheets are supplied to a feed cassette, an enrolment key is operated, the total number of record sheets is input and stored in a memory, and then the input total number of record sheets is displayed on a display unit.
FIG. 3 is a flowchart illustrating the display of the number of remaining record sheets according to the present invention, which includes the steps of counting the number of printed pages of record sheets in performing a printing operation, reading in the total number of enrolled record sheets, subtracting the number of printed pages of record sheets therefrom and then calculating the number of remaining record sheets, and displaying the number of remaining record sheets if a display key for the number of remaining record sheets is operated.
A preferred embodiment of the present invention will be described in detail with reference to FIGS. 1 to 3.
A user using a plain paper facsimile supplies record sheets to a feed cassette in step 21. Since the record sheets are supplied in units of a predetermined number of pages packed at the time of manufacture, when the user supplies record sheets to the feed cassette, he can identify the number of record sheets supplied. At this time, the user may operate an enrolment key for the purpose of enroling the total number of record sheets. CPU 10 checks in step 22 whether the enrolment key of OPE 20 is operated or not. If the enrolment key is not operated, the program is terminated. However, if the enrolment key of record sheets is operated, the process proceeds to step 23. In step 23, CPU 23 displays a message requesting the input of the number of record sheets on a display unit of OPE 20 and proceeds to step 24.Then, the user inputs the total number of record sheets supplied to the feed cassette by pressing numerical keys provided in OPE 20. At this time, CPU 10 checks in step 24 whether the key signal corresponding to the total number of record sheets is input or not. If the key signal is input, the process proceeds to step 25. In step 25, CPU 10 stores the input total number of record sheets in memory 30, and proceeds to step 26. In step 26, CPU 10 displays the input total number of record sheets on the display unit of OPE 20, and the program is terminated.
In performing printing on the record sheets due to document reception or copying after enroling the total number of record sheets supplied to the feed cassette as described above, the operation of displaying the number of record sheets remaining in the feed cassette on OPE 20 will be described with reference FIG. 3.
In step 31, CPU 10 checks whether or not the printing operation has been started by document copy or reception. If the printing operation has been started, the process proceeds to step 32. In step 32, CPU 10 checks whether or not paper transfer is detected by sensor 80. If the paper transfer is detected, the count is increased by 1 in step 33. In step 34, CPU 10 checks whether or not the printing operation is complete. If the printing operation is not complete, the process returns to step 32 and the printing for the next page is performed. In step 32, if paper transfer is detected by sensor 80, the count is again increased by 1 in step 33 so as to count the number of printed pages of record sheets until the printing operation is complete. If the printing operation is complete, the process proceeds to step 35 to store the number of printed pages of record sheets counted by the counting operation. Then, the process proceeds to step 36. In step 36, CPU 10 checks whether or not the total number of record sheets enrolled when the record sheets are supplied to the feed cassette is stored in memory 30. If stored, the process proceeds to step 37. In step 37, CPU 10 reads in the total number of record sheets stored in memory 30, subtracts the number of printed pages therefrom to calculate the number of remaining record sheets. Then, the process proceeds to step 39. In step 39, CPU 10 checks whether or not a display key for the remaining record sheets is operated in OPE 20. If the display key is operated, the process proceeds to step 41.In step 41, CPU 10 allows the number of remaining record sheets to be displayed on the display unit of OPE 20 so that the user can identify the displayed information.
In the embodiment of the present invention just described, whenever paper transfer is detected by sensor 80, the count was incremented to calculate the number of printed pages in software. However, the present invention can be implemented without departing from the scope thereof, by calculating the remaining quantity of record sheets by down-counting using a counter whenever paper transfer is detected by sensor 80 after setting the total number of the record sheets at feeding time.
Also, in the embodiment of the present invention, the remaining quantity of the record sheets was calculated to display the result on a display unit.
However, if the remaining quantity of record sheets is less than a preset number (5 sheets), the present invention may be implemented such that an alarm is generated to be output via speaker 90, thereby informing the user to supply record sheets.
As described above, according to the present invention, after enroling the total number of record sheets when supplying the record sheets to a feed cassette in a plain paper facsimile, the number of pages of record sheets printed during document copy or reception is counted to calculate the number of remaining record sheets to be displayed. Therefore, the remaining quantity of the record sheets can be detected exactly.
