Abstract
A security/safety blanking device for electrical terminal connections e.g. of an isolation switch 18 is locatable over a plurality of screw terminals (18a) to prevent access thereto, in use. A mounting portion (11) depends normal to and is attached along an edge of a blanking portion (10) for locating with mounting lips (21) on the switch. A shroud portion (12) depends outwardly from the mounting portion (11) for surrounding electrical cable ends (19) to be connected to the switch. Cut-out portions (14) may be formed along the common edge of the blanking (10) and mounting (11) portions for engagement with locking tabs on the switch. A sealing wire may be passed through apertures (17), (23). <IMAGE>
Description
Imtrovements Relations to Electrical Connectors
The invention relates to electrical connectors, more particularly to a security/safety blanking device for attachment to an electrical terminal connector, especially as provided on switch devices, to prevent unauthorised tampering therewith. The device is particularly useful for attachment to isolation switches provided in the electrical mains supply to buildings.
According to the invention there is provided a security/safety blanking device for electrical terminal connections comprising a sheet form blanking portion, for locating over a plurality of screw terminals of a terminal member to prevent access thereto, in use, a mounting portion depending normal to and attached along an edge of the blanking portion, for locating with mounting lips on the terminal member, in use, and a shroud portion depending outwardly from the mounting portion for at least partially surrounding electrical cable ends to be connected to the terminal member, in use.
Cut-out portions may be formed along the common edge of the blanking and mounting portions whereby the edges of the cut-out portions at the mounting portion can engage with locking tabs on the terminal member, in use.
The mounting portion may be formed with an apertured lug to accommodate a wire of a security seal to extend therethrough, in use.
The device may be moulded of synthetic plastics material and may be provided in combination with a switch which comprises the terminal member.
The foregoing and further features of the invention may be more readily understood from the following description of a preferred embodiment thereof, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a security/safety blanking device, and
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the device of
Figure 1 being located on a switch.
Referring now firstly to Figure 1 there is shown a security/safety blanking device comprising a sheet-form blanking portion 10, a mounting portion 11 and a shroud portion 12. The mounting portion 11 depends downwardly from one edge 13 of blanking portion 10 with cooperating cut-outs 14 located along edge 13. The shroud portion 12 is of generally inverted "U" shaped cross-section and depends outwardly from mounting portion 11 to surround a pair of inverted "U" shaped apertures or slots 15 formed in mounting portion 11. A lug 16, with through aperture 17, is formed to depend outwardly from mounting portion 11 above shroud portion 12.
Referring now to Figure 2 there is shown the terminal portion of a switch 18 to which the live and neutral mains cables 19, of an electric mains supply to a domestic dwelling, are attached within terminals located in area 18a of switch 18 and clamped or released therefrom by screws or bolts (not shown) rotated by a screwdriver or spanner from above to be located in direction of arrow A. With cables 19 located and clamped in switch 18 the blanking device is located above cables 19 and switch 18 and the outer side edges 20 of mounting portion 11 located behind mounting lips 21 of switch 18. The blanking device is then moved downwardly until the upper edges of mounting portion 11, at cut-outs 14, locate beneath locking tabs 22 on switch 18, at which location blanking portion 10 is located to prevent release of cables 19.
With the blanking device located in position, shroud portion 12 partially surrounds cables 19 to prevent finger access to the cable connection area. A sealing wire can then be threaded through aperture 23 in switch 18 and aperture 17 in lug 16 and sealed in known manner to prevent unauthorised removal of the blanking device and tampering with the electrical connections.
Although the device is shown and described for use with the terminal connections to a switch it could be used with the terminal connections of any device having suitable mounting lips and locking tabs.
The device is preferably moulded as an integral member of synthetic plastics material such as polycarbonate.
Claims (6)
1. A security/safety blanking device for electrical terminal connections comprising a sheet form blanking portion, for locating over a plurality of screw terminals of a terminal member to prevent access thereto, in use, a mounting portion depending normal to and attached along an edge of the blanking portion for locating with mounting lips on the terminal member, in use, and a shroud portion depending outwardly from the mounting portion for at least partially surrounding electrical cable ends to be connected to the terminal member, in use.
2. A device as claimed in claim I wherein cutout portions are formed along the common edge of the blanking and mounting portions whereby the edges of the cut-out portions at the mounting portion can engage with locking tabs on the terminal member, in use.
3. A device as claimed in claim 1 or 2 wherein the mounting portion is formed with an apertured lug to accommodate a wire of a security seal to extend therethrough, in use.
4. A device as claimed in any preceding claim which is moulded of synthetic plastics material.
5. A device substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawing.
6. A device as claimed in any preceding claim in combination with an electrical switch which comprises said terminal member.
