Abstract
A combined draught excluder and door stop for an internal door comprises two parallel tubes connected by a central web. The device is slid under the base of the door when it is open so that the tubes fit either side of the door with the central web located underneath the base of the door. The device is made from a single piece of material which is folded and sewn to form the web and tubes which may be filled with standard soft furnishings filling or wadding. <IMAGE>
Description
DOOR STOP & DRAUGHT EXCLUDER
This invention relates to a single piece, double sided, dual purpose door stop & draught excluder.
Door stops are well known household fixtures or fittings which comprise either solid or soft furnishing components. The solid type are often in the form of a fixture: a stop of rubber, plastic, metal or other hard material secured to the floor or affixed to a wall facing or adjoining an interior household door; or they are in the form of a fitting: a weight of material which is positioned on the floor against the base of the door, or a wedge of wood, plastic, rubber or other hard material which is jammed under the base of the door. The soft furnishing type consists of a filled fabric item which is positioned freely against the base of the door. All varieties of door stop, whether fixtures or fittings, solid or soft furnishing types, serve to stop an opened door from involuntarily moving beyond a determined point.
Door draught excluders are also familiar domestic household items & either as fixtures or fittings, comprise either solid or soft furnishing materials. As fixtures they are constructed of plastic & sponge, rubber or a similar flexible compound material & may be affixed to one or both sides of the bottom edge of an interior household door. As fittings they are commonly constructed of fabric covered wadding or filling, similar to a household cushion, which are positioned to one side of the bottom edge of such a door. All variety of door draught excluders, whether fixtures or fittings, solid or soft furnishing types, serve to impede air from passing under or around a closed door.
The filled fabric type of fitting may also serve as a moveable door stop for an open door, although it impedes door movement in one direction only.
However efficient in its designed role an extant door stop or door draught excluder is claimed to be, none - with the exception, to a limited extent, of the soft furnishing, non-fixed draught excluder - serves both roles: ie is dual purpose.
Furthermore, none, either door stop or draught excluder serves both sides of the door simultaneously. Moreover, many of these door stops or draught excluders - again with the obvious exception of the soft furnishing type of fitting - require affixing to either the interior door, the floor or a facing or adjacent wall. By definition, the fixed or fixture type is in this category & its removal, as for maintenance, cleaning or storage is inconvenient. Of the fittings which are door draught excludes, the soft furnishing type usually comprises of a single roll of wadded or stuffed fabric which is not affixed to the door & must be physically positioned as the door is moved.
Alternatively, if it is attached by some means to the base of the door to simultaneously serve as a door stop it remains a clumsy & inefficient device, impeding door movement in one direction alone, & requires being physically detached from the door for the purpose of storage, maintenance or cleaning.
According to the present invention there is provided a removeable & free standing, single piece, double sided & dual purpose door stop & draught excluder. It comprises a single piece of folded & sewn fabric, stuffed with wadding or filling on two sides along its length, which is the length of a standard interior household door, h having an unstuffed central section, which is marginally wider than the width of such a standard door, which may be slid under & removed from beneath the base of such a door & is not affixed to it in any way.The invention, being maintained in physical position by the door, moves only as the door is moved; it maintains the chosen position of the door as a door stop; it enables the door to be physically closed without requiring its removal; it prevents air from passing under the door from either side; it may be both physically inserted & removed, as for purposes of maintenance, cleaning or storage with ease.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 shows a plan of the invention, drawn to scale.
Figure 2 shows the invention in perspective.
Figure 3 shows in perspective the invention in position beneath the base of a standard interior door.
Figure 4 shows an end view of the invention in position beneath such a door.
Referring to the drawing, & to Figure 1 in particular, the invention comprises a specified length - the length of a standard interior household door - of folded fabric 1 which is sewn at one end & along its length so as to afford three compartments of specified width 2, 3 & 4. Compartment 2, its width specified as being marginally more than the width of a standard interior household door, is sewn at both ends. Compartments 3 & 4, also of specified width, are packed with a standard soft furnishings filling or wadding before being sewn closed.
The invention, as in Figure 2, is then slid physically under the length of an open interior household door, section 2 being under the door itself & the filled compartments 3 & 4 lying either side of & abutting the base of the door, as in Figures 3 & 4.
The door may now be opened or closed physically at will: the invention, held in place by but not affixed to the door impedes neither function. When the door is in a closed position, the invention serves to impede air passing under the door from either side; when the door is in an open position, the invention serves to impede the unintentional moving of the door in either direction. The invention may be withdrawn from under the open door by pulling at the end which is outward facing; it may then be reconditioned or cleaned before reinsertion with ease to its position under the door base.
