Abstract
A meat flavour coating kit comprises a pouch adapted to hold at least a half pound portion of whole or partitioned meat therein, which pouch contains one or more flavour coating additives and has an opening at the upper, in use, end thereof which is sealed closed in a tamper proof or tamper evident manner at 5 and which is re-sealable at 7 to enable the pouch, once opened to introduce the meat, to be repealed in a sufficiently secure manner that no leakage of the contents of the pouch occur when the pouch is shaken to coat the meat. <IMAGE>
Description
MEAT FLAVOUR COATING KIT
Field of the Invention
The present invention relates to a meat flavour coating kit and method of use thereof whereby uncooked or partially cooked meat may be covered in a flavour coating.
Background to the Invention
Coating of meat including red meat, white meat and fish meat and, of recent years, even vegetarian meat substitutes is widely practiced in all styles of cooking. Perhaps most familiar of the flavour coatings is the flour and curry powder coating of Indian style barbecue or grill joints and the ever popular
Chinese style spare ribs.
Coated meat products of this nature are more frequently appearing on supermarket shelves in pre-coated form for home cooking rather than by purchase of independent sachets of coating ingredients or purchase of individual ingredients to make up the coating materials at the time of cooking. Inevitably, however, pre-coated meat products are relatively expensive to produce and cannot readily be provided in a wide range of flavour coatings.
The use of sachets as a flavour coating kit of prepared mixed coating ingredients provide greater versatility and economy than the pre-coated meats but prove problematic at the time of applying to the bought meat since they must be emptied into a mixing vessel in which the meat must then be thoroughly mixed. The mixing is conventionally done in the mixing bowl or on a dish or other flat surface which must be cleaned and commonly requires the cook to either man handle the meat within the coating to ensure that it is properly covered or to use utensils for that purpose which then require cleaning also.
It is a general objective of the present invention to provide a convenient clean and economical kit for the flavour coating of meat which overcomes the above described disadvantages of the prior art.
Summarv of the Invention
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a meat flavour coating kit which comprises a pouch adapted to hold at least a half pound portion of whole or partitioned meat therein, which pouch contains one or more flavour coating additives and which has an opening at the upper, in use, end thereof which is sealed closed in a tamper proof or tamper evident manner and which is re-sealable to enable the pouch, once opened to introduce the meat, to be re-sealed in a sufficiently secure manner that no leakage of the contents of the pouch occur when the pouch is shaken to coat the meat.
Preferably the pouch is sealed in a tamper proof or tamper evident manner by a first seal means and may be re-sealed by a second sealing means.
Suitably the tamper proof or tamper evident first seal means extends across the upper extremity of the pouch and the second sealing means extends across the pouch inwardly of the first sealing means such that the first sealing means may be cut away to open the pouch and the second sealing means may then be used to re-seal the pouch.
Advantageously the first sealing means is a heat seal or strong adhesive seal and the second sealing means is a weak adhesive seal or a pop-fastening strip.
Suitably the pouch is of a type known as a doy pack pouch which packs flat and expands from the base upwards.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of flavour coating a portion of whole or partitioned meat which comprises providing a meat flavour coating kit as described in the first aspect of the present invention, opening the tamper proof or tamper evident seal at the upper, in use end of the pouch, placing the portion of meat within the pouch and re-sealing the pouch, shaking the pouch to mix the meat and coating to ensure effective surface coating of the meat, and re-opening the pouch to remove the coated meat.
Brief Description of the Drawings
A preferred embodiment of the preferred of the present invention will now be more particularly described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 is an elevation view of the preferred embodiment of pouch from one side; and
Figure 2 is a perspective view of the pouch from the direction of Figure 1 but from below.
Description of the Preferred Embodiment
As shown in the accompanying drawings, the meat flavour coating kit comprises a pouch adapted to hold at least a half pound portion of whole or partitioned meat, the pouch being a doy pack pouch and comprising three webs of twin or tri-ply material, two of which form the opposing side walls 1,2 of the pouch and the third of which forms the base wall 3 thereof.
The webs are suitably formed of a polyester-aluminium-polyethene laminate and are bonded together by heat sealing or use of adhesive around the lateral edges of the webs.
The base wall 3 is so arranged as to provide a concave floor to the chamber of the pouch and, when the pouch is opened out from it flat pack state and filled the bottom edges of the two side walls 1, 2 project downwardly to provide a substantially rigid stand for the pouch.
The nature of the pouch is such that it will expand to the greatest extent from the base when the meat is placed therein with the upper edges 4 coming together to be re-sealed, with the meat in the pouch. The upper edges 4 of the pouch are sealed together by a first seal 5 being a heat or adhesive seal similar to the seals along the other lateral and base edges. This seal 5 is cut away along the line 6 when it is desired to gain access into the pouch.
A second seal 7 is provided inwardly of the position of the first seal 5 and is used to temporarily re-seal the pouch for shaking and mixing together of the meat and coating mixture within the pouch, whereby shaking and mixing of the two can be carried out thoroughly and without spillage and without messing of any other vessels other than the pouch in which the coating mixture is originally purchased.
The coating mixture within the pouch may be any of a range of coatings such as, for example, barbecue coating, Chinese style coating, whole pepper for fish or steaks or spiced flour for fish.
The pouch may even be used to hold liquid coating mixtures such as marinades and may be used to hold poppy seeds, spices and other edible food additives.
Suitably the pouch is washable for re-use and is flushed with inert gas/nitrogen to enhance shelf life of the pouch containing the coating mixture.
Claims (6)
