Abstract

229,424. Bundy, H. W. Dec. 6, 1923. Tubes. - Overlapped or multiple-ply brass or other tubes for automobile radiators, gasoline lines &c. are made by passing a metal strip through a forming apparatus and then through an apparatus for soldering the seam arranged in line therewith. A solder coated or plain strip fed from a spool a, through a fluxing bath b, then through rolls c for removing excess flux and is then converted by a series of dies e and pairs of rolls f into a multiple-ply or an overlapped tube. The tube is then passed through one or more twopart chambers such as g, h, heated by burners i so as to melt the solder coating and solder the plies together. The chamber h is slotted at k for the passage of a solder strip m which is fed by rolls n and belt o at a speed depending on the speed of the tube, and is melted in the chamber. The solder between the plies, by capillary action draws in some of the additional solder so as to effect a more even distribution of the solder. The chambers are provided with perforations p, q, to receive carbonized flux, which is scraped off the tube during its passage therethrough, and is punched or blown out a intervals. The tube then passes through a graduated series of dies r for removing surplus solder and for reducing the tube to size. These dies are heated by flames burning at the ends of passages z supplied with combustible gas from a tube x and with air through passages y. The tube then passes through a water jacket 1 supplied by a pump with water from a reservoir 3 so as to set the solder. The strip may be coated with a mixture of 70 parts of tin to 30 parts of lead. Specificaton 229,412 is referred to.
