Abstract

A built-in anti-theft device for a bicycle, in which a component forming part of or attached to the pedal crank of the bicycle is movable to a locking position in which the component projects sideways from the crank so as to engage the frame or a wheel of the bicycle when the crank is turned, to prevent the bicycle being ridden. A lock is provided to lock the component in the locking position. In one form of the invention, a pedal (18) of the bicycle is used as the locking component, the pedal (18) being rotatable through 180 DEG from its normal position to the locking position in which it extends inwards to engage the frame (4) of the bicycle. In another form, the component is as elongate member (64, 84) mounted on the pedal (60, 80) and slidable or rotatable to the locking position, in which it projects inwards to engage the frame (4) or wheel (6) of the bicycle. <IMAGE>
