Abstract

229,156. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., and Hanna, C. T. May 14, 1924. Explosions, preventing in connection with electric apparatus.-The casings of switches, mining controllers &c. are fitted with a device which allows the hot gases to escape should there be an explosion within the casing but cools them down so that no flame can pass through to the outer atmosphere. The device comprises two or more groups of spaced washers A arranged so that the hot gases pass through them in series. Fig. 1 shows two groups separated by a plate B which drives the gases into contact with the cooling metallic enclosure E. A rod C prevents undue pressure on the upper group of washers. The enclosure E has three or more projections G, Fig. 3, which serve to locate the washers A and also to divide the hot gases into sections.
