Description
2291411 1 A JUNCTION DEVICE The invention relates to a junction device,
particularly for dispense systems of containers such as intermediate bulk containers OCs).
Such 1BC's are often made of plastic and are relatively rigid. Because of their expense, they are re-usable, but to be re-used they have to be cleaned after each use, at a cost typically of ú30 per unit per cleaning operation. This adds considerably to the capital cost, and to cost of handling and transport of material in the IBC's.
It is an object of the invention to seek to mitigate these disadvantages.
According to the invention there is provided a junction device for an orifice in a wall of a container. comprising a fusible connector having integral means for fusing the connector, at least partially.
Tle device may comprise a plastic material and the connector may comprise a flange. This provides an integral unit.
The integral means mkv comprise a heating element carried by the flange. 7lis is a relatively simple yet efficient construction, particularly where the heating element may be an electrical conductor, such as a copper element.
Tle copper element may comprise a rectangular coil lying in the plane of the flange. This provides for uniform heating and fusing.
Illere may be a through orifice adapted for connection with a flange of a dispense system.
2 Me orifice may be of substantially key-hole configuration. This provides an efficient locking connection with a flange of an outlet of an IBC.
According to a second aspect of the invention there is provided a container, including a junction device as hereinbefore defined at an inlet or outlet orifice.
The container may be relatively rigid and may include intemally thereof a relatively flexible inner liner or container.
IBC's and a junction device are hereinafter described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings.
Fie. 1 shows an elevational view of a junction device according to the invention; and Figs 2 to 4 show, to a further scale, IBC's to which a junction device of Fig. 1 has been applied.
Referring to the drawings, there is shown a junction device 1 for an orifice in the wall of a container such as a relatively rigid IBC made of plastic, the device comprising a fusible connector 1 in the form of a flange 2, having integral means in the form of a heating element 3 for fusing the flange 2 at least partially.
The device is made integrally from plastic and has a body defined by the flange ", which is rectangular, and a part 4 having a through orifice 5, which in the embodiment is of generally key-hole shape, though it can be made of any desired shape.
4 3 The heating element 3 is in the form of a copper wire electrical conductor element which is arranged in the form of a rectangular coil and which lies substantially in the plane of the flange 2, and encompassing the orifice 5. The ends of the wire terminate in electrical contacts 6 which are exposed for connection to a source of electrical power (not shown). The wire itself lies in a groove or passage reamed in the flange 2 just below the surface, the wire 3 being drawn through the passage as it is formed. There is thus a thin layer of material of the flange overlying the wire 3.
In use, the device 1 is placed over a hole which has been cut in the wall of an IBC 7 at a desired location, and secured in position as by clamps. The contacts 6 are then connected to the power source, which is switched on. The wire 3 heats up, and this is sufficient to melt the layer of plastic of the flange 2 which lies thereover. This is in contact with the IBC 7 which in some circumstances may itself be softened locally too. When the current is switched off, the wire cools, and the melted plastic of the flange 2 cools, securely bonding it to the IBC 7. A flexible liner or IBC can then be secured in the outer 1BC by securing its flange in the orifice 5.
The rigid IBC can thus be re-used merely by removing the flexible inner 1BC liner, which is disposed of at the end of use. This cuts the cost by about 50% as a flexible IBC is half the cost of a cleaning operation.
In all cases, the flange produces a homogenous "weld" right round the hole in the IBC so that there is no possibility of ingress of contaminants, which is important for use in say the Aseptic Food Industry, where hygienic conditions are essential. The device essentially forms a "patch".
