Abstract

A mounting for an artificial limb includes a sleeve (1) made of flexible material to fit around and over an amputated stump. The sleeve has an air escape valve (19) provided at its lower end which enables air to be vented from within the sleeve when fitted. A connection (2) is provided on the sleeve for connecting the sleeve to an artificial limb (3). The valve ensures that there is a close fit between the sleeve and stump. To maintain the suction fit between the sleeve and stump, the value may be a one-way non-return value. In order to custom fit the sleeve to a particular stump, the duct 7 with value 19 removed can be used to allow a gap fitting moulding material to be injected into the sleeve when fitted on the stump. <IMAGE>

Description

MOUNTING FOR ARTIFICIAL LIMB The present invention relates to a mounting for an artificial limb.
Silicone plastics stump socks otherwise known as prosthetic sleeves are known for cushioning an amputation stump against the substantially vertical pressures acting between an artificial limb and the stump. It is further known from US Patent No. 4,923,474 to secure a stump to an artificial limb by means of an airtight silicone plastics prosthetic sleeve which is pulled over a stump. The distal end of the sleeve is completely closed in order to maintain the airtight fit. A suitable fitting moulded into the distal end of the sleeve then connects to the artificial limb. In effect the suction of the sleeve on the stump keeps the artificial limb attached to the stump. A problem with this kind of attachment is that if any air is trapped in the distal end of the sleeve there is a tendency for the sleeve to move relative the stump causing skin breakdown.
A mounting for an artificial limb according to the invention comprises a sleeve made of flexible material so as to fit around and over an amputated stump, and air escape means extending from within the sleeve to the exterior of the sleeve, and a connection on the sleeve for connecting the sleeve to an artificial limb.
The provision of the air duct prevents air from being trapped within the sleeve and makes it easier to fit the sleeve to the stump which otherwise has to be very carefully rolled over the stump to expel any air trapped within.
Preferably the sleeve is made of airtight material, the air escape means being formed as a duct at the distal end of the sleeve.
In order to maintain a suction fit between the sleeve and stump the duct has a one-way non-return valve so that air may escape from within the sleeve but is prevented from returning into the sleeve. The duct is preferably provided through the connection so that the sleeve has only a single hole at the centre of the distal end of the inside of the sleeve. In order to maintain the connection in relatively fixed axial relation to the stump the sleeve may be formed so that it is substantially inelastic axially. This may be achieved by moulding an axially inelastic material within the material of the sleeve, the axially inelastic material extending axially up the sleeve from the distal end. The connection preferably has a means enabling releasable engagement with the artificial limb.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which:- Figure 1 is a cross section of a mounting for an artificial limb according to the invention.
The mounting embodying the invention comprises a sleeve 1 made from silicone plastics or other suitable material which is generally flexible, resilient and impermeable and a connection 2 on the sleeve for connecting the sleeve to the top 3 of an artificial limb in this case an artificial lower leg.
The sleeve 1 has a substantial moulded distal end 5 which can be accurately moulded to receive a patient's stump.
The final exterior end is circular in shape. In the centre of the distal end 5 is a duct 7 and moulded within the end 5 is a connection member 9 onto a threaded projection 11 of which is screwed a support plate 13. The projection 11 also is internally threaded to receive a securing disc 15 which secures into a central hole 17 a non-return valve 19 formed as an elastomeric tube with an external slit at 21.
Extending radially from the inside of projection 11 is an air duct 23 which meets an axially displaced but axially aligned duct 25. This enables air to pass from the inside of the sleeve from A to B outside the sleeve.
Axially inelastic material 27 of nylon or the like are also moulded within the sleeve and extend from the distal end within the wall 29 of the sleeve at least 17 cm upwards.
This prevents the sleeve from stretching in the axial direction whilst allowing resilient stretching of the sleeve in the radial direction.
Screwed into the bottom of connection projection 11 is a coupling member 31 which can be formed to receive an upper sleeve 32 of limb 3 and which may have a ratchet connection 33 as shown or a pin connection.
In order to fit the mounting, the sleeve 1 which can be up to 42 cm long is rolled onto the patient's stump whereupon air is automatically expelled from A to B. A suitable coupling member 31 is already screwed into connection projection 11. The patient then fits the artificial limb into the coupling member where it is locked by the ratchet or other connection.
Whereas the duct 7 is centrally located in the distal end it could be off centre and not designed to provide a duct through the connection but that could result in a less than efficient means for air to be expelled from within the sleeve.
In order to custom fit the sleeve to a particular stump the duct 7 with valve 19 removed can be used to enable a suitable gap fitting material to be injected into the sleeve when fitted on a stump.
