Rollers and the like, treating.-A machine for lapping cylindrical or conical articles, for example, rollers for bearings, comprises an upper non-rotating lap 15 adjustable vertically by movement of a supporting rack-bar 14 carried by an. arm 12 mounted on a post 11, which is secured to a base 10, and a lower lap 42 which rotates and also has an eccentric motion, the period of the eccentric motion being different from that of the rotation. The conical rollers R to be lapped are positioned in obliquely placed slots 51 in a holder 50, which is located between the laps,. a projecting annular surface 46 of the lap 15 contacting with the conical surface of the rollers, and a ring 47, loosely surrounding the projection 46, serving to prevent radial displacement of the rollers and to lap the outer ends of these. The lower lap rests upon a drive-plate 20, which is secured to a sleeve 22 rotated by worm-gearing 23, and which rotates the lap by means of a roller 44 engaging a slot 43 in the lap. The eccentric motion is given to the lap by a stud 39 engaging an opening in a cross bar 41 secured to the lap, the stud being carried by a plate adjustable radially on a disc 35 mounted on a shaft 30 mounted within the sleeve 22. The shaft 30 is rotated through differential gearing 31 - - 34 by the sleeve 22. Specification 216,684 is referred to.
