Abstract

A one piece hand-held dispenser 1 comprises a handle 4 and a mounting 3 for frictionally engaging a spool 2 (Figure 3) which comprises a cardboard tube, wound with stretch film material 15. The dispenser mounting 3, in use frictionally engages the spool to apply braking which retards rotation of the spool 2 on its mounting 3. The mounting 3 is of elongate form of varying circular cross-sections, and is made resilient by providing it with a cruciform slot 10 extending substantially the full length of the mounting. This allows the mounting 3 to contract when subject to squeezing, to allow fitting of the spool 2, thereafter tending to expand to its original cross-section. <IMAGE>

Description

HAND-HELD DISPENSER FOR SPOOLED MATERIALS This invention relates to hand-held dispensers for spooled material, and is concerned with dispensers wherein the spools are of hollow, tubular form.
The invention has particular application to dispensing stretch film plastics material.
According to the invention, a hand-held dispenser for spooled materials wherein the spool is of hollow tubular form, is provided with a mounting for the spool, which, in use of the dispenser, frictionally engages with the spool so as to apply a braking force which retards rotation of the spool on its mounting.
Retarding rotation of the spool allows stretch film to be subjected to tension when the dispenser is used, which is advantageous as described hereinafter.
The mounting is preferably of resilient construction whereby it contracts to allow the spool to be fitted to the dispenser and thereafter expands to frictionally engage with the spool.
Such a mounting preferably comprises at least one segmented collar, the segments being spaced by variable wldth gaps, which reduce to allow the spool to be fitted to the dispenser and thereafter enlarge to allow the collar to frictionally engage with the spool.
Because the collar defines a limited surface for frictional engagement with the spool, manipulation in fitting the spool onto the mounting is facilitated, and the frictional force in use is also limited to a suitable level.
An embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a side view of a dispenser according to the invention; Figure 2 is an end view thereof, taken in the direction of arrow II of Figure 1; and Figure 3 is a side view of a spool for use with the dispenser.
With reference to the drawings, a hand-held dispenser 1 for spooled materials is illustrated wherein the spool 2 (Figure 3) is of hollow, tubular form, comprising a cardboard tube.
The dispenser 1 is provided with a mounting 3 for the spool 2, which, in use of the dispenser, frictionally engages with the spool so as to apply a braking force which retards rotation of the spool 2 on its mounting 3.
The dispenser 1 illustrated comprises a one-piece component, having a handle 4 which carries the mounting 3.
The mounting 3 is of elongate form of varying circular cross-sections. The mounting 3 comprises a cylindrical lower portion 5, an intermediate portion 6 of convergent/divergent form, a ring or collar 7, a cylindrical upper portion 8 and a head portion 9. The head portion 9 has a bezel-like periphery.
The mounting 3 is made resilient by providing it with a cruciform slot 10 extending substantially the full length of the mounting.
Thins allows the cross-sectlon of the mounting 3 to contract when subjected to a compressive or squeezing force, thereafter tending to expand to its original cross-section when this distorting force is removed, or reduced.
The provision of the cruciform slot 10 results in making portions 5 to 9 of the mounting 3 of segmented form.
As shown in Figure 3, the tubular spool 2 carries a winding 15 of polyethylene stretch film.
The bore 16 of the spool 2 is of uniform cross-section, having a diameter somewhat less than that of the collar 7 prior to fitting the spool 2 onto the mounting 3 and somewhat greater than those of mounting portions 5, 6 and 8.
In use, the mounting 3 is hand-squeezed so that it contracts in cross-section thus reducing in width the radially-extending gaps formed by the cruciform slot 10. The spool 2 is then push-fitted first over the head portion 9 of the mounting 3 and then over the remainder thereof. The spool 2 is then mounted between the head portion 9 and the landing 14 form by the upper end of the handle 4, with a small axial clearance.
Any attempt to rotate the spool 2 on the dispenser mounting 3 meets with substantial resistance, as the mounting 3, free of the hand-squeezing application, has expanded in cross-section, enlarging the cruciform gaps, whereby the segmented collar 7 frictionally engages with the bore 16 of the spool 2.
Thus the collar 7 exerts a resilient braking force, indicated by arrows 17, which retards rotation of the spool 2 on its mounting 3.
If one end of the winding 15 of stretch fllm is now applied to an item, for example, a bundle of steel tubes, the film can be wound round the item by rotational movement, about the item, of the handheld dispenser 1-. During this application of the stretch film, the film is subjected to tension, which is advantageous, as it causes the film to be stretched as It is applied, thereby creating a constricting force on the item after application of the film so that the film binds the item effectively. Tension prevents any opportunity for portions of the film to stick together before being placed on the item.
Film tension results, of course, from the resilient braking action of the collar 7 on the bore 16 of the spool 2. The spool 2 can rotate on its mounting, about central axis 18, but not freely, as its rotation is retarded.
The number of radially extending gaps formed in the spool mounting 3 can vary, according to requirements.
For example, a single slot, extending across the diameter of the collar 7 may be sufficient.
Other ways of achieving frictional engagement of the mounting 3 with the spool 2 are possible. For example, the segments of the collar 7 may be spring-biassed towards spool-engaging positions.
The position of the collar 7 may be changed from that illustrated, according to requirements.
More than one collar 7 may be provided, axially spaced from each other.
