Description
t SPRAY TIP ASSEMMLY 2288348 The present invention relates to a spray tip
assembly, and more particularly, but not exclusively, to a pre-orifice reversible tip.
Airless spray tips are of course well known and have been used for many years in applying a great variety of materials. Traditionally, enhanced atomisation may be attained with such tips only be increasing the pressure from what is typically an already high level (generally at least 2000 PSI). A so-called fine finish tip has been know which utilises a preorifice to initiate atomisation of the material but such tips have only been applied in so called flat tips. The difficulty with such tips is that when they become clogged, they are quite difficult to clean.
Traditional airless tips have been utilised in so called reversible tips, that is, a cats-eye shaped tip is mounted in a rotatable cylinder such that when the tip becomes clogged the cylinder may be rotated so that materials are blown through the tip in a reverse direction thereby removing the clog. Such reversible tips are typified by US Patent No. 4, 165,836 which is owned by the assignee of the instant invention. The contents of that patent are hereby incorporated by reference. While there is a form of reversible pre-orifice tip, it utilises a large (of the order of.04 inches in diameter) orifice which does not have a significant effect on enhancing atomisation.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a reversible airless spray tip assembly having a spray axis, a member rotatable about an axis of rotation substantially normal to said spray axis, and a tip having a cats-eye shaped or elliptical opening, the assembly comprising: a substantially circular pre-orifice having a diameter less than substantially 0.5mm or a substantially rectangular preorifice located in said member, said pre-orifice being spaced apart in said member from said tip; and an expansion cavity in said member between said pre-orifice and said tip.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a spray tip assembly having a nozzle from which fluid is expelled in use, wherein a pre-orifice is provided, through which said fluid passes before being expelled from said nozzle, which 2 pre-orifice is substantially rectangular, or is substantially circular and has a diameter less than substantially 0.5mm.
According to a third aspect of the present invention there is provided a spray tip assembly having a nozzle from which fluid is expelled in use, wherein a pre-orifice is provided, through which said fluid passes before being expelled from said nozzle, in which a cavity of larger crosssectional area than said nozzle and said pre-orifice is provided between said nozzle and said pre-orifice.
According to a fourth aspect of the present invention there is provided a spray tip assembly having a body portion with a nozzle formed therein through which fluid is expelled, wherein the body portion also has a contraction cavity formed therein in communication with said nozzle through which the fluid passes prior to being expelled from the nozzle.
The assemblies described in the three preceding paragraphs may be of the reversible type.
In the assemblies described in the four preceding paragraphs, the nozzle may have a cats-eye shaped or elliptical tip.
According to a fifth aspect of the present invention there is provided a reversible airless spray tip assembly having a spray axis, a housing, a cylinder rotatable about an axis of rotation normal to said spray axis and a tip having a cats-eye shaped opening with an axis of elongation, wherein the assembly comprises: a substantially rectangular preorifice located in said cylinder, said pre-orifice, being diametrically spaced in said cylinder from said tip; an expansion cavity in said cylinder between said pre-orifice and said tip.
According to a sixth aspect of the present invention there is provided reversible airless spray tip assembly having a spray axis, a housing, a cylinder rotatable about an axis of rotation normal to sad spray axis and a tip having a cats-eye shaped opening with an axis of elongation, wherein the assembly comprises: a pre-orifice in said cylinder, said pre- orifice having a diameter of less than about.02 inches and being diametrically 0 0 A 3 spaced in said cylinder from said tip; an expansion cavity in said cylinder between said pre-orifice and said tip.
The present invention may be utilised in a reversible tip such as those typically sold by Graco Inc. under the trade marks RAC IV and REVERSE-ACLEAN IV. Such tip assemblies have a housing with a rotatable cylinder therein, the cylinder having a cats-eye shaped airless tip in one side and a diffuser bar on the other. In the present invention, a pre-orifice member may be placed between the diffusion bar and the airless tip, and an expansion/contraction cavity is formed therebetween.
The pre-orifice may be either a circular orifice of the type previously used in fine finish tips or it may be a rectangular orifice. When the rectangular orifice is used, the long side of the rectangle is preferably substantially parallel to the axis of elongation of the cats-eye shaped airless tip. The combination of shape, alignment and the expansion/contraction cavity are the key factors in producing better atomisation than available with conventional arrangements at the same or lower pressures, depending upon the type of fluid coating.
The assembly may allow an improved or similar quality atomisation at pressures up to 25 % less than normal tips. It may also be capable of atomising some high solid emulsion coatings which are incapable of being atomised by conventional tips.
The width of the pre-orifice may be substantially twice the width of the nozzle.
For a better understanding of the invention, an embodiment will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a cross-sectional view of the cylinder utilised in the airless tip of an embodiment of the instant invention; Figure 2 is a cross-sectional view of the pre-orifice of an embodiment of the instant invention; Figure 3 is a plan view of the rectangular pre-orifice; Figure 4 is a top plan view of an airless spray tip blank manufactured according to an embodiment of the instant invention; Figure 5 is a sectional view taken along line 5-5 of Figure 4; and 4 Figure 6 is a sectional view taken along line 6-6 of Figure 4.
In the drawings like reference numerals refer to the same or similar parts throughout the figures.
An airless tip assembly generally designated 10 comprises a housing 12 (shown in phantom and described in more detail in the above-referenced US patent no. 4,165,836). Located in housing 12 is a cylinder 14 having a through-bore 16 therein. Located in through-bore 16 are a tip 18 which is a typical airless spray tip except as is described more fully in Figures 4 to 6 below.
Located in bore 16 behind tip 18 are a gasket 20, pre-orifice member 22, retainer 24 and diffuser pin 26. Diffuser pin 26 is used in the same manner as in previous reversible tips. Pre-orifice member 22 has a preorifice rectangular (or circular) opening 28 therein which is shown in more detail in Figures 2 and 3. In the case of the circular orifice, the maximum diameter for such an orifice is of the order of.0183 inches.
An expansion cavity 30 is located in the other end of pre-orifice member 22 and combines with contraction cavity 32 in the backside of tip 18 to form an expansion/contraction cavity.
Tip 18 has a cats-eye shape opening 34 which has an axis of elongation which is located parallel to the axis of elongation of rectangular opening 28. Misalignment between these two axes should be no more than 5 % for optimal results.
Turning to Figures 4 to 5, the airless spray tip blank shown is quite similar to traditional airless spray tip blanks except for the contraction cavity 32 which is moulded into the backside of the tip 18.
It is contemplated that various changes and modifications may be made to the tip assembly without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention as defined by the following claims.
