Abstract

Apparatus is described for monitoring variations in a parameter such as a varying voltage level. Two signals (30, 40) are created from the varying voltage level. The signal (30) may track the varying voltage with negligible delay, but the signal (40) is created with a larger time constant. Consequently, if the voltage rises suddenly, the voltage (30) will rise more rapidly than the voltage (40) until the two profiles cross. Monitoring the difference between the signals (30, 40) thus allows sudden changes in the voltage to be detected. The technique has many applications such as detecting rises in motor current for an automatic door, arising from the presence of an obstruction. <IMAGE>
