Description

2287243 Folding cylinder The invention relates to a device for switching a
cylinder for use in printing, in partiuclar a folding cylinder of the kind having a variable cam path which can be switched between two operating settings, in one of which collecting or a similar operation is carried out, and in the other of which it is not carried out.
A collecting and folding cylinder having a fixed cam disc and a cover disc driven by the folding cylinder is known. For instance, in DE 3810 439 Cl the cam path which determines the collecting or noncollecting state is traced by a roller lever of a shaft connected to holding or folding mechanisms such as pins or folding blades which are to be switch. The cam path is produced by the adjustable overlap of the cam disc and the cover disc, for which purpose the cover disc can be additionally rotated with respect to the folding cylinder driving it by an axial movement of a hollow pinion belonging to a multi-part gear wheel.
This solution is relatively complex and requires a great deal of space in the axial direction of the folding cylinder.
These disadvantages also apply to a design using the drive of the cover disc through the folding cylinder by means of planetary wheel drive, but with which the switching- over to non-collecting is produced by the lateral movement of the cover disc out of the effective region of the roller lever (DE-AS 25 37 919).
The aim of the invention is to produce a folding cylinder which, with simple technical means and a small space requirement in the axial direction of the folding cylinder, makes possible the switch- over from collecting to not-collecting, or vice-versa, preferably while the folding apparatus is operating.
According to the invention there is provided a folding cylinder having a device for switching between collecting or non-collecting settings, which device 1 includes a fixed cam disc and a cover disc which can be driven by the folding cylinder, forming a variable cam path for collecting or notcollecting in dependence on the overlap of the cam disc and the cover disc for a roller lever of a shaft connected to holding or folding mechanisms, in which a planetary wheel is mounted at one end of the folding cylinder and parallel to its axis, and engages on the one hand with the cover disc and on the other with a sun wheel arranged preferably co-axially to the folding cylinder in such a way that rotation of the sun wheel gives rise to rotation of the cover disc into settings affording the cam paths for collecting or not-collecting.
The solution is characterised by a simple compact construction requiring little space in the axial direction and makes it possible to switch over the folding cylinder at full machine speed.
The sub-claims contain further advantageous features of the invention, such as the manual adjuster axially spaced from the planetary wheel mechanism, preferably constructed by having the sun wheel in the form of a short shaft with the sun wheel proper at one end and the adjuster at the other. The sun wheel can then be mounted via its central section, for instance in a housing portion fixed to the side wall of the print apparatus.
For a better understanding of the invention an embodiment will now be described in detail, referring to the accompanying drawing, which shows a schematic cross-section of a device for switching between collecting and non- collecting in a folding cylinder.
A shaft (not shown) is mounted in the folding cylinder 1 in a known manner. This shaft is connected to a holding or folding mechanism, on which is secured a roller lever 4.which carries two cam rollers 2, 3 which are coaxial but axially offset with respect to each other.
11 a i 4 The axially outer cam roller 2 co-operates with a fixed cam disc 7 connected by means of a housing portion 5 to a frame wall 6, and the inner cam roller 3 co-operates with a two-part cover disc 11 mounted rotatably on an axle journal 8 of the folding cylinder 1 and comprising a bearing body 9 and a cam body 10.
Mounted at the end of the folding cylinder 1 and parallel to its axis is a planetary wheel 15 engaging on the one side into inner teeth 12 of the bearing body 8, and on the other side in engagement with a sun wheel 14 rotatably mounted in a coaxial or central bore 13 of the housing portion 5. The axis of the planetary wheel 15 is near the outer circumference of the end face of the journal 8.
The sun wheel 14 is provided with a toothed segment 17 limited as regards its pivoting movement by respective stops 16 secured on the housing portion 5, corresponding to the settings for collecting and notcollecting. The toothed segment meshes with a pinion 21 secured on an adjustment spindle 20 mounted in the frame wall 6 and carrying on its outer side a clamping ring 18 and a control element 19.
To switch between the two settings an additional rotation, with respect to the cam disc 7 fixed in the frame, of the cover disc permanently driven by the folding cylinder 1 is carried out. This rotation can also be carried out whilst the machine is operating. The cover disc 11 circulates in the collecting setting, for instance, defined by one of the stops 16, periodically covering the actuation zone of the cam disc 7 for the cam roller 2 at a speed such that the roller lever 4 is respectively actuated only after collection of the products by a corresponding exposure of the cam roller 3, whereas on the other hand when the cover disc 11 is circulating in the non-collecting setting fixed by the other stop and angularly offset with respect to the cam disc 7, the actuation zone of the latter remains free for the cam roller 2 on each rotation of the folding cylinder 1, causing a noncollection of the products.
In the exemplary embodiment pins, for instance, holding the product at its front edge on the folding cylinder are controlled by the roller lever 4, whilst the folding blade (not shown) permanently protrudes beyond the periphery in an uncontrolled manner so that when the products are collected the folding jaws of the folding jaw cylinder (also not shown) periodically remain open synchronously with the folding cylinder 1, thus avoiding a fold.
On the other hand there is also the possibility of controlling other folding mechanisms, with a further cam disc or cover disc being arranged angularly offset in the circumferential direction of the folding cylinder in order to actuate them by means of a separate roller lever next to the cam disc 7 and the cover disc 11, in accordance with the arrangement of the various folding mechanisms.
It is also conceivable to provide a second switchover device on the opposite axial end of the folding cylinder for actuating other folding or holding mechanisms, with a similar effect.
