Abstract

228,665. Manifoldia, Ltd., and Bailey, J. Dec. 3, 1923. Bookbinding - machines. - In machines of the kind wherein two or more sheets of paper comprising a set are superposed and secured together by adhesive applied at one edge, the sheets are fed successively to a roller and held to the rotating periphery by pins or other retaining means during one or more revolutions of the roller, the adhesive being applied to one edge of each sheet except the last, and means being provided for rendering the adhesive-applying device inoperative while the final sheet of a set is being assembled, and for automatically releasing the retaining device when a set is completed. Means may also be provided for numbering the sets, or any sheets of the sets, and for printing any required particulars upon each completed set. The paper sheets may be conveyed from the feeding point 20, Fig. 3, to the assembling-roller 3 by thread or other conveyers, admission to the roller being controlled by a gate 10 operated by levers which are actuated bv a cam on the shaft 80 of the assembling-roller. The incoming sheet is received on pins 11, Fig. 5, on the periphery of the roller, and as it is carried around, its edge is gummed by a roller 26 in contact with a roller 7 rotating in a trough 23 containing adhesive. A perforating-roller 53 on an arm 54 may be provided to perforate the edge of the sheet, means being provided for automatically lifting the perforating- roller when necessary. The mechanism for disengaging the adhesive roller from the last sheet and for releasing an assembled set is controlled by a system of cams mounted on a shaft 8, which can be driven at various speeds, according to the number of sheets comprising a set, by variable gear contained within a casing 51 and driven by a shaft 47. The shaft 47 is driven from a shaft 80 through pinion gearing 48, the shaft 80 being itself driven by the main driving shaft 4 through pinion gearing 5. To prevent adhesive from being applied to the roller 3 when a sheet does not extend around its circumference, and to prevent the application of adhesive to the final sheet of a set, the shaft 25 of the roller 26 is mounted upon arms 24 which are loosely carried on the shaft 22 of the roller 7 and are lifted against spring tension by a cam 35 on a shaft 38. Two mechanisms are provided for rotating the cam shaft 38 to lift the adhesive roller 26, (1) a cam 34 at the opposite end actuated by an adjustable cam 27<a> on the roller shaft 80, the surface of the cam being varied according to the length of the applied sheets, and (2) a lever 37 keyed to the shaft 38 and actuated by an adjustable push rod 33, while the final sheet of a set is being assembled, the action and timing of the push rod being controlled by a lever 30 which is operated by a cam 29 on the variable speed shaft 8. The set of assembled sheets is released from the pins 11 on the assembling-roller 3, Fig. 5, by means of hinged countersunk blades 13 mounted adjacent to the pins and secured upon a shaft 19 mounted in bearings provided in the ends of the roller. One end of the shaft 19 projecting through the end of the roller carries a lever 18 which contacts with the end 16 of a sliding rod 15 when the latter is reciprocated by a cam 14 on the cam shaft 8, thereby lifting the blades 13 and throwing off the set of sheets. The numbering may be effected by numbering-mechanism 41 of known type, the means for changing the numbers comprising a finger 40 projecting from a rod 39 and engaging a pin 42 on the numbering-mechanism when the rod 39 is moved lengthwise bv a bell-crank 46 and lever 45 which are actuated bv a cam upon the shaft 8. The sets of sheets may be delivered direct to a board 62, or may be passed through printing or ruling mechanism such as 63-66 inked by a roller 75. Both the numbering-mechanism and the printing- mechanism may be thrown, out of action by mounting the spindle 67 of the numbering-roller and the spindle 66 of roller 65 within eccentric bearings which can be rotated by crank arms and connecting-rods coupled thereto and operated by a hand lever.
