Description
2286629 BOLT LOCK FOR A DOOR, WINDOW OR THE LIKE The invention relates to
a lock fitting comprising an encasement extending at the rear side of a face-plate and containing an actuating mechanism provided with at least a key member capable of acting on at least locking means such as a dead bolt or another locking organ.
This invention will f ind its application in the field of the building ironmongery.
There are obviously known many lock fittings meeting the above description. This is in particular the case of bolt- lock-type lockfittings including one or several operating rods moving in opposite directions or in the same direction, this under the action of an actuating mechanism on which the user can act by means of a key member or through an operating handle.
Actually, the key member provides such bolt-lock-type lock-fittings with the notion of safety. Thus, this key member can e.g. act on a dead bolt and, should the case arise, on locking means which are aimed at immobilizing the operating rod or rods in locked position. It should be noted that it is already known to combine the notion of the dead bolt and of locking the operating rods in locked position through the barrel-type key member.
In addition, in order to avoid the unlocking from being possible through a direct action on the locking organs, such as the dead lock, or even on the means for locking the operating rods in locked position, with this key member is often associated a safety device aimed at locking the dead bolt or said means for locking in unlocked and/or locked position. More particularly, such a safety device includes an actuating foot which, when actuated by the web of the key member, releases the dead bolt or the locking means the movement of which can then be ensured through said web.
other functions may of course be assigned to this key member, such as the control of the movement of the operating rod or rods.
This actuating mechanism is accommodated within an encasement which, when the lock fitting is aimed at being embedded, is positioned in a cut out or in an opening made in the front edge of the stile or the rail of the leaf of a door, window or the like.
As a matter of fact, the problem of such lock fittings is often related to the size of the encasement. More particularly, inside this encasement the components of the actuating members, such as e.g.
the door-knob hole on which the operating handle allows to act and the key member, are often arranged in a same alignment parallel to the face-plate. This provides this encasement with a height larger than the width. This does not impede that the cross-section of the stile or rail aimed at receiving this lock fitting is not always sufficient to allow for the accommodation of said encasement. It can therefore be judicious to take advantage of the depth provided by the intersection of a rail and a stile corresponding to the leaf of a door, window or the like. More particularly, in the case of a bolt-lock-type lock-fitting, one can imagine to accommodate the encasement inside a rail perpendicular to a stile which receives the operating rod or rods.
This accordingly requires an encasement the height, however not the width, of which is limited.
However, in these circumstances, the organs of the actuating mechanism should be arranged substantially in an alignment perpendicular to the face-plate, with all the problems this raises, especially those related to the positioning and the immobilization of the key member in such an encasement.
It is indeed possible that troubles arise regarding the axial immobilization of the barrel forming the key member inside the encasement. In this respect, it should be observed that this axial immobilization of the key member inside the encasement is so far achieved by means of a screw passing through the face-plate and co-operating with a tapped bore transversally machined in the lower portion of the body of this key member. Therefore, in order for this co- operation of the screw with the key member to be possible, it is absolutely necessary for the vertical median plane of this latter to be oriented parallelly to the axis of the face-plate and for nothing to impede the screw from passing through, i.e. for no actuating organ to be located between this key member and the face-plate.
This invention is in some way aimed at providing a solution for these problems.
For this purpose, the invention relates to a lock fitting comprising an encasement extending at the rear side of a face-plate and containing an actuating mechanism provided with at least a key member capable of acting on at least locking means such as a dead bolt or another locking organ, characterized in that it includes means for immobilizing the key member in axial translation inside said encasement and acting in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal median plane of said key member under the action of actuating means accessible from the inner face and/or the outer face of the encasement.
The advantages achieved thanks to this invention reside in that the immobilization of the key member inside the encasement can be performed from the inner face and/or the outer face of the leaf of a door, window or the like. Hence, there is no longer any need for having access from the front edge of this leaf and generally in a direction parallel to the plane of this leaf. Finally, this allows to impart to the vertical 1 m@di&n pl&ne Of the key MCMDer gfly inside the encasement, this with respect to the face- plate. In addition, in such circumstances, it is no longer necessary for this key member to be located in the vicinity of said face-plate.
Other aims and advantages of this invention will become obvious during the description which follows and relates to one embodiment which is given only by way of an indicative and non-exhaustive example.
The understanding of this description will be made easier with reference to the attached drawings in which:
- Figure 1 is a schematical view of a window the leaf of which is fitted with a lock fitting according to the invention, - Figure 2 is a schematical and cross-sectional partial view of a lock fitting according to the invention embedded in a leaf as shown in Figure 1, 20 - Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view according to III-III of Figure 2 and corresponding to a first embodiment of the means for immobilizing the key member inside the encasement, Figure 4 is a view similar to Figure 3, however corresponding to a second embodiment.
This invention relates to a lock fitting 1 more particularly shown in the shape of a bolt lock in Figure 2, it being however understood that this invention is in no way limited to such a design.
Furthermore, in the case of an application to a window as shown in Figure 1, this lock fitting may be embedded in a groove 2 of a front stile 3 corresponding to a leaf 4 of a door, French window or the like.
This lock fitting 1 includes an actuating mechanism 5 which is accommodated in an encasement 6 extending at the rear side of a face-plate 7.
i As a matter of fact, in the embodiment shown in Figures 1 and 2, one observes that the longitudinal axis 8 of this encasement 6 is oriented substantially perpendicularly to the axis of the face-plate 7. In addition, it is positioned in a recess 9 made at the intersection of the stile 3 and an intermediate rail 10 of said leaf 4.
In such circumstances the organs the actuating mechanism 5 is comprised of should be distributed inside this encasement 6, which can give rise to a number of problems. In particular, some of these organs can in these circumstances be relatively far away from the face-plate or their arrangement with respect to this latter may be altered, resulting in a number of constraints. This is viz. the case for the axial immobilization, inside this encasement 6, of the key member 11 the actuating mechanism 5 of such a lock fitting 1 is fitted with. 20 By way of an example, as shown in Figure 2, the key member 11 can be obliged to adopt such a position that its longitudinal median plane 12 be oriented perpendicular to the axis of the face-plate 7. In such case, as particularly shown here, this arrangement is laid on by the limited height of the encasement 6. Now, in such circumstances, it is no longer possible to immobilize this key member 11 inside this encasement 6 according to the state of technique. More particularly, according to this state of technique this immobilization in axial translation of the key member inside said encasement 6 occurs through a fixing screw perpendicularly inserted from the front edge of the stile of the leaf whilst passing through the face- plate 7. Thus, this fixing screw, which is accessible only when the leaf is half open, fixes itself into a tapped hole made in the lower portion of the body 13 of the barrel forming this key member 11. When referring once again to this embodiment corresponding to Figure 2, one observes that the encasement 6 is neither accessible from its upper edge 14 nor from its lower edge 15, because of the presence of the glazing, so that no screw can be inserted from either of these edges 14, 15 with a view to immobilize the key member 11 in axial translation. For this purpose and according to the invention, the lock 10 fitting 1 includes means 16 for immobilizing the key member 11 in axial translation acting in a direction perpendicular to the longitudinal median plane 12 of said key member 11 under the action of actuating means 17 accessible from the inner face 18 and/or outer face 19 of the encasement 6. According to the embodiment of Figures 2 to 4 of the attached drawings, the means 16 for immobilizing the key member 11 in axial translation are formed by at least one locking member, in this case at least one 20 ball 20, 21 sliding in at least one recess 22, 23 made in the encasement 6, according to the embodiment shown, two recesses 22, 23 are made on both sides of a recess 24 aimed at receiving the key member 11. More particularly, the recesses 22, 23 are made in the encasement 6 so that their protruding end 25 corresponds to the tapped bore 26 transversally machined in the lower portion of the body of the key member 11 when this latter is more particularly inserted into its recess 24 inside the encasement 6. 30 Thus, in such a position the locking members, such as balls 20, 21 arranged in the recesses 22, 23, are capable of inserting, at least in part, on one side and/or on the other side into this bore 26 of the key member 11, this under the action of the actuating means 17. In this respect and according to the embodiment shown in Figure 4, these actuating means 17 are in the shape of a screw 27 with truncated tip 28 provided for in a tapped opening 29 with an axis perpendicular to the plane of the encasement 6 and ending into a recess 22, 23.
Thus, by acting on such a screw 27 so as to have its truncated tip 28 penetrate farther into the corresponding recess 22, 23, the locking member, viz.
the ball 70, 71 co-operating with this truncated tip 28, is pushed back in direction of the key member 11, so as to partly penetrate into the tapped bore 26 and thus immobilize this key member 11 in axial translation.
In order to facilitate the reversibility of the lock fitting, the tapped openings 29 made at the level of the encasement 6 are advantageously through-openings which intersect with the recesses 22, 23, as shown in Figure 4 corresponding to a second embodiment. In addition, the screws 27 have in this case a symmetrical configuration with respect to their transversal median plane 30 and include, in their median portion, a peripheral groove 31 with truncated walls, whilst the ends 32, 33 are threaded and co-operate with said tapped openings 29 made in the encasement 6.
Thus, by means of a screwdriver-type tool it is possible to have access to the screws 27 on both sides of the encasement 6. However, only the inner side of the profile corresponding to the leaf 4 and receiving the lock fitting is preferably provided with openings allowing the access to these screws 27, this of course with a view to impede the key member 11 from being taken out from outside.
In this respect, in order to achieve this taking out of the key member 11, it is enough to act on the screws 27, so that the bottom of the groove 31 be substantially in the axial extension of the locking members, in this case of the balls 20, 21, authorizing i same to withdraw inside their respective recess 22, 23 when taking out said key member 11.
In order to impede the balls 20, 21 from escaping in the absence of the key member 11, a slight crimping is provided for at the level of the protruding end 25 of the recesses 22, 23, this upon introduction of said balls 20, 21. Here too, these latter are placed only after fitting of the screws 27 into their respective openings 29. Finally, if the aforementioned crimping impedes the balls 20, 21 from escaping, it also limits the protruding length of these balls 20, 21 inside the recess 24 corresponding to the key member 11.
Therefore, these balls 20, 21 can also impede the screws 27 from fully drawing back.
is Hence, one understands that during the mounting are inserted first of all the screws 27. Then, the balls 20, 21 are positioned in their respective recess 22, 23, before the protruding end 25 of these latter be crimped.
The advantages resulting from this invention are obviously the possibility of orienting the key member depending on the place available inside the encasement, whereby it should be reminded that until now the longitudinal median plane 12 of this key member 11 was necessarily arranged parallel to the plane of the face-plate 7 and, in addition, also as close as possible to the rear side of same. Through this face-plate was indeed necessarily inserted the screw allowing to immobilize the key member in axial translation in the encasement. According to the invention, this immobilization can now be achieved from the inner face of the leaf of the door, window or the like, which face is systematically accessible.
Finally, this allows to contemplate the design of an encasement which is capable of being accommodated in an intermediate rail of the wing corresponding to the 4 door, window or the like, which arrangement, besides allowing the design of stiles with a reduced cross-section, often has the advantage of improving the mechanical strength of the leaf itself.
Although the invention has been described in relation with a particular embodiment, it is understood that it is in no way limited to same and that various modifications of shapes, materials and combinations of these various elements can be implemented without therefore departing from the frame-work and the spirit of the invention.
