Description
Plinths for Sunnorting Flooring Battens
This invention relates to plinths for supporting flooring battens.
When laying flooring, it is known to employ various forms of packing material to provide a relatively level base for the supporting battens. One type of packing comprises plinths which can be positioned across for example a concrete base and whose height can be raised for levelling purposes by applying additional layers of packing or the like to their undersides. These plinths each include side walls which define a single batten receiving channel. One disadvantage of these plinths is that they can only be used if the batten receiving channels are all aligned in the same direction.
One object of the present invention is to overcome or at least alleviate this disadvantage.
According to the present invention in one aspect there is provided a plinth for supporting a flooring batten, the plinth being produced from a plastics material and including a generally rectangular platform from the four corners of which upstand pillars which together define channels set at right angles to one another to receive flooring battens.
In another aspect there is provided a flooring plinth produced from a plastics material and including a platform having upstanding side walls including openings to receive a flooring batten in either one of two positions set at right angles to one another.
The platform preferably comprises an upper surface of a pedestal whose height can be varied by securing to the under surface of the pedestal one or more layers of packing material. The layers may be secured to the pedestal by an adhesive.
In a preferred form, the plinths are produced from polypropylene.
The undersurface of the pedestal may be lined with a layer of cross-linked closed cell foam.
In one construction, the platform of the pedestal is of square configuration, the upstanding pillars being sited one at each corner of the square shaped platform and each comprising two walls set at right angles.
The invention will now be described by way of example only with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings in which
Figure 1 a plan view from above of a flooring plinth in accordance with the invention; and
Figure 2 is a side view of the plinth illustrated in
Figure 1.
The flooring plinth illustrated in the drawings is preferably produced from 3mm thick polypropylene and comprises a pedestal 1 which defines a platform 2 from each corner of which upstands a pillar 3. Each pillar is defined by two walls set at right angles to one another and neighbouring pillars define batten receiving channels set at right angles to one another.
As shown the platform is of square construction with each pillar 3 positioned at one corner of the square. The undersurface of the pedestal may be lined with a layer of relatively resilient material 5.
In use plinths are positioned on a concrete base to be floored with the batten receiving channels positioned in line across the length and width of the area to be floored.
The platforms of the several plinths are levelled by adhering layers of packing to the underside of plinths to be raised or when appropriate by positioning suitably shaped supports beneath one or more of the plinths. Soft wood battens then positioned between the neighbouring plinths to be supported thereby. Hard wood flooring can then be laid over and be secured to the battens.
It will be appreciated that the foregoing is merely exemplary of flooring plinths in accordance with the invention and that various modifications can readily be made thereto without departing from the true scope of the invention.
Claims (5)
