Abstract
A wheel has the ability to isolate the hub 2 from shocks transmitted by the rim 1 by means of flexible spokes 3 thus eliminating the need for a conventional suspension system as fitted between rigid wheels and vehicle bodies. <IMAGE>
Description
SUSPENDED HUB WHEEL
This invention relates to a wheel, the hub of which has radial movement due to the use of flexible spokes.
Rigid wheels, with or without solid rubber or pneumatic tyres are commonly fitted to vehicles such as prams, trolleys, wheel chairs, go karts and trailers. To ensure a smooth ride it is necessary to provide a suspension system of springs or shock absorbers that support the body of such wheeled vehicles and isolates them from shocks transmitted by the wheels.
Suspension systems of this type require suitable mounting points to be designed into the vehicle and are complex and expensive to manufacture.
According to the present invention there is provided a wheel, the hub of which is attached to the rim by flexible spokes that are able to compress or extend under load allowing radial movement of the hub within the rim, thus isolating the vehicle body, axle and wheel hub from shocks transmitted by the wheel rim.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing in which;
Figure 1 shows a side view of the wheel under no load;
Figure 2 shows a side view of the wheel going over an obstruction.
Referring to Fig. 1 the wheel comprises a rim 1 connected to the hub 2 by flexible spokes 3.
When under no load from any direction the hub 2 is held in a central position in relation to the rim 1 by the flexible spokes 3 as shown in Fig. 1.
When the rim 1 encounters an obstruction 4 it moves upwards compressing the flexible spokes 3 below the hub 2 and extending the flexible spokes 3 above the hub 2 thus isolating the hub 2 from the shock transmitted by the rim 1 as shown in Fig. 2.
When the rim 1 has passed over the obstruction 4 the flexible spokes 3 return the hub 2 to its central position as shown in Fig. 1.
Claims (1)
- CLAIM1 A wheel, the hub of which is attached to the rim by flexible spokes that are able to compress or extend under load allowing radial movement of the hub within the rim, thus isolating the vehicle body, axle and wheel hub from shocks transmitted by the wheel rim.
