Abstract

A refuse bin comprises a receptacle (10) mounted on casters (14) and provided with a swing-top (16, 17). The refuse bin can therefore be wheeled easily to desired locations within the home or office etc. The casters may be mounted to a base unit in the form of a tray. Description

REFUSE BIN This invention relates to a refuse bin for use in the household but also useful in the office etc.

Conventional swing-top or flip-top bins are particularly useful in the kitchen, for the quick and safe disposal of a wide variety of different types of refuse.

However, such bins tend to be limited to use in the kitchen and are not suitable for use generally around the home.

I have now devised a refuse bin which has the advantage that it is easy to move to troublespots around the house and garden (or around the office etc.).

In accordance with this invention there is provided a refuse bin which comprises a receptacle mounted on casters and provided with a swing-top.

In use, it is an easy matter to wheel this refuse bin to required positions. Apart from being useful in the home, the refuse bin is also particularly useful in commercial environments where hygiene is important and messes need to be cleared away quickly.

Preferably the casters are mounted in recesses formed in the bottom corners of the receptacle. Preferably the casters are capable of swivelling through 3600.

Preferably the refuse bin is of all-plastics construction to avoid corrosion.

Preferably the receptacle is provided with a projecting handle to make it even easier to manoeuvre.

Preferably means are provided for holding the swing-top and its housing in an open position when desired: this may comprise a prop for clipping into position between the housing of the swing top and the receptacle or main body of the bin.

This then gives a much larger opening for depositing rubbish when required: the open bin can be pushed up against kitchen units and rubbish swept straight from the overhanging worktop into the bin.

In a modification, the casters are mounted to a base unit in the form of a tray, and the receptacle is formed with a flat bottom which fits onto the tray.

An embodiment of this invention will now be described by way of example only and with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: FIGURE 1 is an isometric view of a refuse bin in accordance with this invention; FIGURE 2 is a bottom view of the refuse bin of Figure 1; and FIGURE 3 is a side view of the refuse bin of Figures 1 and 2.

Referring to the drawings, there is shown a refuse bin which comprises a plastics receptacle 10 of generally square cross-section and open at its upper end. The bottom corners of the receptacle 10 are recessed, as at 12, and casters 14 are mounted to the bottom of the receptacle in these recesses. The casters are preferably of all-plastics construction and are able to swivel through 3600. The refuse bin further comprises a removable swing-top 16 which fits over the open upper end of the receptacle 10. The swing-top 16 includes an inverted-V section closure 17 which is pivoted about an axis generally coincident with its apex.

It will be appreciated that the refuse bin which has been described has the usual ease-of-use advantages of a conventional swing-bin, and the additional advantage that it can be wheeled easily to any desired point of use.

Preferably the refuse bin is of all-plastics construction, to avoid the risk of corrosion as occurs with metal components.

The receptacle 10 may be provided with a handle projecting from its side to make it even easier to manoeuvre.

Preferably the swing-top housing 16 incorporates a prop for clipping between the housing of the swing top and the upper end of the receptacle 10 to hold the whole lid open when required.

In a modification, the casters are mounted to a base unit in the form of a tray, and the receptacle 10 is formed with a flat bottom which fits onto the tray.

Claims

1) A refuse bin which comprises a receptacle mounted on casters and provided with a swing-top.

2) A refuse bin as claimed in claim 1, in which said casters are mounted to a base unit in the form of a tray on which said receptacle stands.

3) A refuse bin as claimed in claim 1 or 2, in which the casters are mounted in recesses formed in the bottom corners of said receptacle or base unit.

4) A refuse bin as claimed in any preceding claim, in which the casters are capable of swivelling through 360".

5) A refuse bin as claimed in any preceding claim, in which said receptacle is provided with a projecting handle to facilitate manoeuvring the bin.

6) A refuse bin as claimed in any preceding claim, further comprising means for selectively holding said swing-top and a housing thereof in an open position.

7) A refuse bin as claimed in any preceding claim in which said holding means comprises a prop for clipping into position between said housing of the swing-top and said receptacle.

8) A refuse bin substantially as herein described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
