Abstract

A device (10) for indicating the temperature at which a liquid boils comprises a receptacle (18) for the liquid, heating means (25) for heating the liquid when in the receptacle (18), sensor means (23) for detecting vibrations of the liquid when boiling in the receptacle (18) and temperature responsive means for measuring the temperature of the liquid. The arrangement is such that when the liquid boils the vibrations of the liquid are detected by the sensor means (23) and the temperature responsive means is activated to provide a measure of the boiling point of the liquid. The device shown is a probe for partial insertion in a brake fluid reservoir, the receptacle (18) being a capillary tube. Use in wine making for determination of alcohol content is also envisaged. <IMAGE>

Description

A Temperature Indicating Device This invention relates to a temperature indicating device for indicating the temperature at which a liquid boils.
According to the present invention, there is provided a temperature indicating device for indicating the temperature at which a liquid boils comprising a receptacle for containing the liquid, heating means for heating the liquid when in the receptacle, sensor means for detecting vibration of the liquid when boiling in the receptacle and temperature responsive means operable in response to signals received from the sensor means whereby, on detection of vibration of the liquid in the receptacle, the temperature responsive means is activated to provide signals indicative of temperature of the liquid.
Following is a description, with reference to the accompanying drawing, of one method of carrying out the invention.
The drawing is a schematic diagram, shown partly in cross section, of a probe of one embodiment of a temperature indicating device in accordance with the present invention.
Referring to the drawing, there is shown a probe 10 comprising a cylindrical chamber 11 an upper end portion of which has secured thereto a housing 12 and a lower end portion of which is closed by an end wall 13. A circumferential wall 14 of the chamber 11 is provided with a plurality of slots 15 extending in a circumferential direction of the wall 14 adjacent the end wall 13. A base 16 of the housing 12 has an aperture therein (not shown) through which extends a tubular member 17 having a narrow bore comprising a capillary tube 18.
An upper portion of the member 17 is provided with an external thread 19 which is engaged by a pair of nuts 20, 21 which locate the tubular member 17 relative to the base 16 of the housing 12 and coaxially of the chamber 11.
The tubular member 17 is provided with an external circumferential recess 22 in which is located a circumferential vibration/sound sensor 23 which is coaxial with the capillary tube 18. The sensor 23 includes an extension 24 for connecting the sensor 23 to a printed circuit board (not shown) located in the housing 12.
The tubular member 17 extends through a coaxial helical heating element 25, an upper extension 26 of which is secured relative to the chamber 11 and which is adapted to be connected to the printed circuit board.
The printed circuit board also has connected thereto a thermistor (not shown), which extends into the capillary tube 18, a microprocessor (not shown) and a programmable read only memory EPROM (not shown), each of which components are connected one to another in a circuit which is adapted to receive electrical power and which includes a display (not shown) forming a closure panel for the housing 12.
An application of the device is in the testing of brake fluid of motor vehicles. When brake fluid, due to hygroscopic characteristics, absorbs moisture the boiling point of the fluid is reduced. The boiling point of a good quality brake fluid over a period of two years could reduce from 260"C to 1600C due to absorption of moisture. The device according to the invention can be used to determine the boiling point of brake fluid and thereby indicate whether deterioration is within an acceptable range by comparing measured temperature of the fluid with a predetermined value.
In carrying out such tests, the probe 10 is partially inserted into a reservoir of brake fluid so that a proportion of the fluid enters the chamber 11 through the slots 15 and is drawn upwardly through the capillary tube 18 by capillary action.
The fluid in the tube 18 is heated by the heating element 25.
When the fluid in the tube 18 boils and vibrates in the tube 18, the vibrations are sensed by the sensor 23 in consequence of which a signal is generated in the electrical circuit which controls operation of the thermistor and a signal issues indicative of the temperature of the fluid in the tube 18 at the instant that the fluid boils. The processor may be programmed to process the signal and operate a display which may indicate the temperature and/or whether the fluid under test has deteriorated beyond an acceptable condition.
It will be appreciated that the liquid in the chamber 11 is not affected since all testing occurs only in the capillary tube 18.
It will also be appreciated that a device in accordance with the present invention may be used in other applications. For example, the device may be used in wine making where the boiling point is directly proportional to the alcohol content.
