Abstract

A device has a body 1 which provides a guide for a drill used in the drilling of a mortice. The device is fixed to a surface, by means of screws or clamp, in the correct position aligned with visual reference marks on the device. A template suited to the mortice required is held in the body. The template allows a drill to pass through a number of times to create a series of holes in the surface. <IMAGE>

Description

MORTICE DRILL GUIDE This invention relates to a device which creates a mortice.
A mortice is a general term used in carpentry to describe a type of joint where a tenon joint passes into a similar sized slot known as a mortice. A mortice is used in a variety of timber constructions including doors, locks and windows.
The mortice is most often created by drilling a series of holes in a line. The sides of the slot are then made flat by pairing out with a chisel.
The job is made difficult by the accuracy required when drilling the required depth into the thickness of a piece of timber.
The present invention is a device which facilitates accurate and measured drilling of the aperture for a mortice. It consists of a guide in to which a drill bit is inserted perpendicular to the timber. The guide provides visual markers to facilitate the accurate positioning of the mortice in the timber and has means to be secured to the timber during operation.
A specific embodiment of the invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing material in which: Figure 1 shows in perspective the guide as it is presented to the surface.
Figure 2 shows in perspective the guide with removable templates to facilitate different sizes of drill bit according to the size of mortice.
Referring to the drawing the guide 1 is placed on the surface of the material such that the reference line on the body corresponds with the required position of the mortice. The guide is fastened to the surface by a clamping to. or screw passing through, the mounting brackets 2. The mounting brackets 2 also provide a centre reference for the drill guide.
The drill Is placed in turn in each of the positioning guides of the device. When the drill has passed through all the positioning guides. it is removed and a chisel or similar device used to complete the mortice.
