Abstract

Load torque is smoothly decreased at the time of transmission put into reverse and thereafter to improve durability of frictional engagement device. Specifically, when the shift lever is put into reverse (step 301), torque is decreased (step 303), and a hydraulic pressure is applied to clutches CO and B4 of a main transmission portion to (step 305) until the car is ready for reversing (steps 307 to 311). If the overdrive is required to operate (step 313), a hydraulic pressure is applied to a brake BO of a sub-transmission portion (overdrive portion) (step 315), and the sub-transmission portion is set to a high speed (step 317). After the sub-transmission portion is set to the high speed, torque-down control is finished (step 319). <IMAGE>
