Abstract

228,237. Nasmith, J. W. Oct. 27, 1923. Sheet-separators; pile tables and supports; sheet-carriers. -Blanks are fed to rotary scoring and cutting machines, or sheets are fed to other machines, by a mechanism involving friction feed rollers 41<a>, moved to and fro across the top of the pile to buckle the sheets, in conjunction with a rising and falling rail 34 which, when raised, allows the top sheet to move between feed rollers R for advancing the separated sheet to the machine. The sheets are supported on a table T mounted at each side on crossed links 11, 12 and pivoted to sliding blocks 5, 10 moving on guides, the blocks 5 being moved to the left to raise the table on the lazy tongs " principle by means of a rod 14 moved to the left by mechanism, controlled by the height of the pile, including a clutch controlled bv the movement of the connecting rods 41 reciprocating the feed rollers 41<a>. The table T is mounted, on a truck U which can be disconnected from the frame F when a new pile is required. The rods 41 are driven from a disc on a shaft 27, on which is a cam for raising and lowering the rail 34. Each rod 14 is formed with a rack at its end which is put into gear with a pinion 15 by a cam 16 operated by a lever 18 and rod 19. The pinions 15 are driven by worm gearing from a shaft 21 which is driven intermittently by a clutch 35 when permitted by a spring-pressed pawl 36 controlled by a pin 37. The pin 37 is fitted with a transverse pin 4 engaging a slot 46 in a bell-crank lever 44, the movement of which controls the clutching and de-clutching of the shaft 21. Each rod 41 is fitted with a block 56 which is adapted to contact with a catch 54 on a lever 52 when the pile is at the required height, and with a catch 55 on lever 52 when the pile needs raising. The levers 52 control the bell cranks 44 by sliding blocks 50 on rods 43 connected to the bell-cranks, blooks 48, 49 and springs 57 being used in connection with rods 51 connected to the levers 52. The shaft 21 is thus de-clutched when the levers 52 are moved clockwise by the blocks 56, and clutched when moved counterclockwise. In a modification, the clutching is controlled by the movement of the rail 34 which acts on a second bell-crank for operating the bell-crank 44 when the rail 34 has to descend a certain distance to engage the pile.
