Abstract

The principle of layered corrugated cardboard with loadbearing properties and with lateral stability is utilised in the development and manufacture of children's furniture. It is light, sufficiently strong and versatile to form a range of furniture slotted together from standard thickness components on the mortice and tenon or recess and tenon principle with a push fit. With a Booster Chair or a Bookshelf, gluing the components together is necessary. With a Stool or a Table, gluing the components together is not essential. With a Chair or a Settee, gluing the components together is optional. The figures show the parts for a two seater settee, these fitting together via tenons 7 and slots 6. <IMAGE>

Description

INTERLOCKING FURNITURE.
This invention relates to the interlocking components of children nursery or play room furniture.
Children's furniture is of necessity small, light and loadbearing.
Those apart this invention has the added advantages of being inexpensive, disposable and biodegradable. The ideal material to embody all these qualities is corrugated cardboard.
The most common application of corrugated cardboard in thicknesses of 3 to 4, or 7mm is packaging. When it is produced in a thickness of 20m=-with the corrugated layers arranged in pairs and laid alternately longitudinally and transversely such that the two transverse layers are sandwiched between the pairs of longitudinal layers the board thus formed is loadbearing with lateral stability. It can therefore be used for vertical loadbearing components and horizontal loadbearing components.
When the components are interlocked as allowed for in each design they form a stable loadbearing frame.
A specific embodiment of this invention will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawings of a two seater settee in which : Figure 1 shows the elevation of a two seater settee.
Figure 2 shows the elevation of the back viewed from behind.
Figure 3 shows the plan of the seat.
Figure 4 shows the elevation of the sides.
Figure 5 shows the elevation of the central support.
Figures 2 to 5 also have typical sections drawn alongside.
Assembly is in the following order. Tenon 1 on the top of the central support is connected by a push fit into the recess 2 under the seat.
The tenon 3 at the rear edge of the central support is connected by a push fit into the recess 4 in the back. The tenons 5 at the rear edge of the seat are connected by a push fit into and through the mortices 6 in the back. The tenons 7 at the ends of the seat and the tenons 8 at the ends of the back are connected by a push fit into and through the mortices in each of the sides.
The various tenons can either be glued in position or left untreated to allow for dismantling in the reverse order and then rebuilding.
However with the booster chair gluing the components together is essential and with the bookshelf gluing the components together is advisable. In the case of the chair and the settee gluing is optional.
In the case of the table and the stool gluing is not necessary.
