Abstract
A hollow ventilation strip 1 fitted into a rebate between a window frame 3 and a glass panel assembly 2, creates a gap so as to allow air and any condensation present to pass through. A seal (12, Fig. 2, not shown) pushes against the panel 2 to create a waterproof seal which guides any liquids that may run down the panel 2 through the vent thus preventing a build-up of liquid on window members to which it is fitted. The strip is made of plastics, and may comprise several pieces joined together, or a one-piece moulding. An insect mesh may be provided. <IMAGE>
Description
DRIP-VENT
This invention relates to a multi-functional window vent.
Window vents are compulsory in some countries. They allow air to circulate with in a room and there for allowing unwanted moisture and gasses to escape. Traditionally window vents are made by drilling holes into a member of the window frame or window sash. Vent covers, usually plastic are inserted into or placed over the prepared holes. They are designed so as not to restrict the air flow.
These holes can however reduce the strength of the window.
Also as warm air is drawn across the cold glass on the journey to the vent, condensation can form on the glass which can run down and settle on the window sill or bottom rail of a sash. Over a period of time this is likely to cause the window to rot.
According to the present invention there is provided a dripvent consisting of one or more lengths of material ( usually plastic ) designed so that the moulded or combined shape has a hollow centre so as to allow air and liquids to pass through, and an exterior shape suitable to be fitted in a rebate between a section of a window frame and a panel (usually glass
A specific embodiment of the invention shall now be described by way of example with references to the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 shows a cross section of a drip-vent in position in a typical window.
Figure 2 shows an enlarged three dimensional view of a section of a length of a drip-vent. Some of the pieces in this diagram have been shortened to reveal the under layers.
Referring to the drawing the drip-vent shown in figure 2 comprises several length of material ( usually plastic 7,8,9,10 & 11. Pieces 7,8 & 9 join to make one section and 10 & 11 join so as to make another section. There is a gap between these two section to allow the flow of gasses and liquids.
The drip seal 12 indicates a suitable way of making a water proof seal between the drip-vent 1 and the panel 2 ( of figure 1 ).
The vertical supports 13 indicate a suitable way of retaining the gap between sections 7,8,9 and 10,11 when subjected to stresses such as the weight of glass.
Figure 2. may be made in separate pieces joined together as described above, or the complete structure may be moulded as one or more pieces to achieve the same effect.
The drip-vent shown in position Fig 1. is placed in a rebate in a window sash 3 or window frame 4 or in any other similar type of frame. The panel 2 ( in this case a double glazed panel ) is then placed on top of section 8 and against section 9. Window beading 5 or putty may sit on top of section 8 and against the panel 2. Putty 6, sealent or more drip-vent may be placed in the remaining rebates to fill in any gaps.
A fine mesh can be built into the drip-vent or added after to prevent the intrusion of small objects or small animals such as insects.
Claims (1)
1 A ventilation strip for use in window construction or maintenance, which allows any present gasses or liquids to pass through from one side of the frame in which it is fitted, to the other, and prevents the build-up of liquid on the section of frame to which it is fitted.
2. A ventilation strip as claimed in claim 1, which can be easily fitted into a window by a non experienced person with normal house hold tools.
3. A ventilation strip as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2, which can be fitted in any suitable construction in which ventilation is required.
4. A ventilation strip as claimed in claim 1 or claim 2 or claim 3, wherein the shape of the vent is suitable to fit between two or more sections of an object or between two or more objects, without restricting the flow of any gasses or liquids that are intended to pass through.
5. A ventilation strip as claimed in any preceding claim, whereby a waterproof seal between it and one or more of the ajoining surfaces is formed.
6. A ventilation strip as claimed in any preceding claim.
which can be fitted into it's desired position without alterations of any type to any ajoining sections or objects.
7. A ventilation strip as claimed in claim 5, which does not weaken any of the sections or object within the construction in which it is fitted.
9. A ventilation strip substantially as described herein with reference to Figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawings.
