Abstract
A waste management centre is constituted by means for separating and containing a plurality of waste containers (4). Said means comprises a main support member (1), a plurality of divider members (3) fixed to, and extending generally at right-angles to, the main support member, and a plurality of locking bars (5). Each locking bar (5) is associated with a respective divider (3) and is movable between a first operating position in which it is locked to its divider substantially at right-angles thereto, and a second operating position in which it is free to rotate relative to its divider, thereby permitting a waste container (4) to be moved into position adjacent to the main support member (1) and between that divider and an adjacent divider. <IMAGE>
Description
WASTE MANAGEMENT CENTRE
This invention relates to a waste management centre, and in particular to a waste management centre for use in recycling waste materials.
Recycling waste materials is becoming increasingly important for environmental reasons. The pressures of green consumerism, based on a general realisation of environmental problems we are facing, have made us consider resource conservation and the way we handle and process waste. Thus, public perception of the environment in which we live is rising, and multi-material recycling centres, in which different materials are disposed of in separate waste containers, are increasingly coming into use.
Unfortunately, normal recycling centres of this type are unsightly.
The aim of the invention is to provide a waste management centre which is aesthetically pleasing whilst being cost-effective.
The present invention provides a waste management centre constituted by means for separating and containing a plurality of waste containers, said means comprising a main support member, a plurality of divider members fixed to, and extending generally at right-angles to, the main support member, and a plurality of locking bars, each locking bar being associated with a respective divider and being movable between a first operating position in which it is locked to its divider substantially at right-angles thereto, and a second operating position in which it is free to rotate relative to its divider, thereby permitting a waste container to be moved into position adjacent to the main support member and between that divider and an adjacent divider.
Advantageously, when each of the locking bars is locked in its first operating position, it defines together with the associated divider, an adjacent divider and the main support member a generally rectangular area which is sized to receive a waste container.
One form of waste management centre constructed in accordance with the invention will now be described in greater detail, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawing, the single figure of which is a perspective view of the centre.
Referring to the drawing, the waste management centre is constituted by a main support bar 1 which is fixed in position by a pair of upright members 2 provided at each end thereof. Three L-shaped dividers 3 are fixed to the main support bar as shown, the dividers being spaced by 1.4 metres so as to ensure a compact arrangement for a pair of waste containers 4. A respective locking bar 5 is associated with each of two of the dividers 3, the locking bars being lockable in the position shown to hold the containers 4 in their working positions. When it is desired to remove the containers 4 for disposal of the waste material contained therein, the locking bars 5 are unlocked and pivoted around the upright portions of the dividers 3, thereby enabling the wheeled containers to be removed from the waste management centre.
The members 1, 2, 3 and 4 are all made of galvanised mild steel, though it will be appreciated that they could be made of other materials. The locking action can be achieved by simple padlocks attached between the dividers 3 and the locking bars 5. Such padlocks could be keyed alike in unlimited numbers for ease of use across all waste management centres in a given area. If a simpler, but less secure method of locking is required, the locking bars could be adapted for a simple push-to-lock mechanism.
Where a site allows, the main support bar 1 can double as a mounting for a back-to-back arrangement of divider, this leading to a more cost-effective arrangement.
Where the centre backs onto a wall, it is also possible to mount the dividers directly onto the wall.
Obviously, the waste management centre described above could be modified. For example, where the centre is to be used as a recycling centre, more dividers and locking bars would be provided, so that the centre could accommodate several more containers, thereby facilitating the disposal of different waste materials in separate containers. It would also be possible to vary the size of, and spacing between, the dividers to accommodate waste containers of different makes.
Claims (3)
1. A waste management centre constituted by means for separating and containing a plurality of waste containers, said means comprising a main support member, a plurality of divider members fixed to, and extending generally at right-angles to, the main support member, and a plurality of locking bars, each locking bar being associated with a respective divider and being movable between a first operating position in which it is locked to its divider substantially at right-angles thereto, and a second operating position in which it is free to rotate relative to its divider, thereby permitting a waste container to be moved into position adjacent to the main support member and between that divider and an adjacent divider.
2. A waste management centre as claimed in claim 1, wherein, when each of the locking bars is locked in its first operating position, it defines together with the associated divider, an adjacent divider and the main support member a generally rectangular area which is sized to receive a waste container.
3. A waste management centre substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to, and as illustrated by, the accompanying drawings.
