Abstract
A dust suppressant composition comprising a humectant or derivative thereof, water and optionally other additives. The humectant may be selected from glycols (especially glycerol), sorbitol, lactic acid and salts thereof, fatty acid glycerides, lactamide derivatives, acetamide derivatives and pectin.
Description
DUST SUPPRESSANT COMPOSITION
The present invention relates to a dust suppressant composition and more particularly to a composition for suppressing dust on dirt roads and in the general area of mining operations where there is likely to be substantial creation of dust as a result of the mining activities.
It has been proposed to suppress dust and prevent dirt roads from drying out by application of a composition of water and salt on the road to keep it moist. However, the use of such a composition may have potential environmental problems and cause corrosion in vehicles using the road to which the composition is applied.
A requirement accordingly exists for a composition which attracts or retains water so as to keep dust laden areas moist and which is composed of materials which do not create environmental problems.
According to one aspect of the present invention there is provided a dust suppressant composition comprising:
an humectant or derivatives thereof;
water; and
optionally other additives.
According to another aspect of the present invention there is provided a method for suppressing dust on a dust laden area which comprises applying the dust suppressant composition defined above to the dust laden area.
For environmental reasons, the humectant is preferably biodegradable and non-toxic to living organisms such as humans, animals and aquatic life. The humectant may be selected from glycols such as propylene glycol and triethylene glycol; glycerin (glycerol); sorbitol; lactic acid and salts thereof such as sodium lactate; monoand di-glycerides of fatty acids; lactamide derivatives such as N-(2hydroxyethyl)lactamide, for example, LACTAMIDE MEA (registered trade mark); acetamide derivatives such as N-(2-hydroEyethyl)acetamide, for example, ACETAMIDE MEA (registered trade mark); and pectins. The amount of humectant present in the composition may be from about 5% to about 50% by weight of the total composition.
The other additives may include wetting agents such as calcium lignosulfonate and ethoxylated alcohols, for example, TERIC
G9A6 (registered trade mark); biocides such as hexahydro 1,3,5-tris (2hydroxyethyl)triazine, for example, NP BIOCIDE (registered trade mark); anti-foaming agents such as silicone emulsion; and antioxidants such as butylated hydroxy toluene. The amount of additive present in the composition may be from about 0% to about 5% by weight of the total composition.
The balance of the composition is water which may be present in an amount of from about 50% to about 95% by weight of the total composition.
The composition may be prepared by mixing the humectant and optionally other additives with water. The composition may be applied to the dust laden area by any suitable technique, such as, for example, spraying to form a surface which prevents the area from drying out and does not cause environmental problems. The surface thus formed will also entrap further dust which settles.
The invention will now be described with reference to the following examples. These examples are not to be construed as limiting the invention in any way.
