Abstract
227,985. Swift, G. W. Dec. 29, 1923. Number-printing apparatus; rotary machines. -A machine for printing consecutive numbers or other additional matter at intervals on webs or sheets comprises a carriage reciprocated towards and away from an impression roller over which the web is travelling, and a printing head carried by an oscillating member journaled on the carriage, the movements of the carriage and oscillating member being so timed that the printing head periodically moves into contact with and travels in the same direction and at the same speed as the web. In a machine for consecutively numbering forms on a continuous web 15, the numbering-head 55, of ordinary construction, is mounted in a bracket 50 journaled on a spindle 45 attached to a sliding block 35 which is allowed to move periodically towards the impression cylinder 20, under the action of a spring 36, by an oscillating lever 85. To provide for movement of the head 55 in the direction of the web, a connecting-rod 135 operates an arm 75 adjustably clamped to the hub of the bracket 50, by means of a split collar 76 and set-screw 77, so as to give the bracket 50 an oscillating movement in addition to the reciprocating movement given it by the block 35. The lever 85 is operated by an eccentric bush 90 on a shaft 27 engaging a roller 87 on its lower end, the shaft 27 being driven from the main shaft 100 through gears 101, 102 and 162. The connecting-rod 135 is driven from a crank disc 120 which is circumferentially adjustable, relatively to a driving gear 92 on the shaft 27 by a pin-and-slot arrangement 113, 114. To vary the frequency of the impressions on the web, the gear 101 on the main shaft 100 is replaced by another gear of the requisite size. The means for adjusting the oscillating devices so that the speed of the printing-head over the web remains the same consists of the provision in the crank disc 120 of a number of sockets for the attachment of the rod 135. Alternatively, the length of the rod 135 may be made adjustable. The arm 75 is adjusted on the bracket 50 so as to keep the lowermost position of the printing-head the same, and so as to ensure its contacting with an inking-roller 140. The numbers are changed in the printing-head through a cam 69 fixed to the spindle 45 and engaging a roller 68 on a lever 65 pivoted to the oscillating bracket 50. On each oscillation, a spring-controlled rack bar 60 is reciprocated to actuate ratchet-and-pawl mechanism 58, 59 in the printing head. Inking-apparatus.-The numbering-head 55 is inked from a roller 140 journaled in the machine frame. The roller 140 is supplied by a messenger roller 145 which is moved at intervals into contact with the uppermost roller 150 of three contacting rollers 160, 155, 150 by a cam 149 engaging the lever 148 carrying it. The roller 160 receives ink from a drip nozzle 165 and is moved axially to distribute the ink on the roller 155 by means of a pin on a fixed arm 175 engaging a cam groove in a member attached to the end of the roller 160. The rollers 160, 155, 150 are actuated by gears from the shaft 27.
