Armatures and field magnets; windings; motors, controlling. - In a dynamo-electric machine having a single armature with separate commutator windings, the windings have equal numbers of turns and are so arranged in the slots as to equalize at any instant the linkage of the magnetic flux with the windings for all positions of the conductors down the depths of the slots. The invention is particularly applicable to double-commutator machines, of which the windings are arranged to be connected in series or in parallel, such as the motors employed on petrol-electric vehicles. The armature 3, Fig. 1, has three coils per slot, the conductors D forming one commutator winding, and the conductors d forming the other. Each main pole 1 has separate field coils A and a corresponding to the two armature windings and the coils on alternate poles are oppositely arranged. A similar arrangement is adopted for the coils B and b on the commutating poles 2. Fig. 2 shows a modified construction of armature winding for one coil per slot, the form shown on the left being effective in the case of a machine having a large number of slots. Other modifications having two and five coils per slot are described in which the conductors of the two windings are alternately arranged.
