Description

1 2278338 Bag having a reinforcement at a pour opening This invention
relates to bags of plastics foil, in particular those which are used as refill packs.
EP-A 0 389 257 discloses a bag which has a material strengthening in the region of a contoured upper corner of the bag. By severing part of the contoured corner, the pour nozzle formed by the contour is opened. The material strengthening serves to prevent bending of the pour region, e.g. during pouring out of the bag contents into a supply bottle.
Stabilizing the pour region by means of a strengthening on the one hand has the disadvantage that there exists an increased material requirement for a strengthening of the plastics layer of the bag material. On the other hand, the provision, supply and application of the strengthening material for producing the bag is relatively complicated.
An object of the invention is to improve the pouring performance of a bag. This improvement is to be achieved without any additional expenditure of material, i.e. apart from the usual requirement of plastics foil 2 for the bag surfaces no further plastics parts are to be used.
The invention provides a bag as claimed in Claim 1. At least one reinforcement is provided in the region of a pour opening of the bag. This reinforcement is a substantially singular or multiple linear shaping of the wall of the bag.
The bag according to the invention has the advantage that the pouring performance of the bag is improved without any additional material expenditure of plastics for the bag. The reinforcement is provided solely by a dimensionally stable reshaping of the bag material. The reinforcement may either be introduced in phases into a foil web from which the bags are subsequently formed. Or a bag is first formed, then provided with the reinforcement and finally filled and sealed. It is also possible to carry out the introduction of the reinforcement and the sealing of the bag in one phase.
If a contoured pour opening is provided in one corner of the bag, then an improved pouring performance of the bag is achieved. If the reinforcement extends between the contours of the pour opening, then the pour channel defined by the contour is reinforced in an advantageous manner. It is this pour channel which, without a 3 stabilizing aid such as the reinforcement according to the invention, by bending leads to an uncontrolled pouring performance, especially on emptying product from the bag into a relatively small opening of a neck of a bottle to be used repeatedly.
In terms of manufacture, the production of the reinforcement according to the invention is relatively simple if the reinforcement is a hot-formed or cold-formed groove or channel. A hotformed groove can be produced for example by means of a hot stamping tool which presses the foil into a groove or channel of an anvil. However, a hot-formed groove or channel can also be produced by means of ultrasonic welding methods. In accordance with the foil material used, a cold foil shaping can also be carried out at high pressure.
If two reinforcements lie in alignment with one another on two foil regions of the bag, then the reinforcing action is increased. In order to manufacture a bag in accordance with the invention, there are for example the following possibilities of producing these congruent reinforcements. A form against which sealing is carried out on both sides from outside is introduced into a substantially finished, still open sealing edge bag. Form and sealing tools fit exactly. If outwardly curved parts are provided on the outer surfaces of the form, 4 then as a result in each case outwardly formed parts are produced in the two corresponding foil regions. If grooves or channels are provided on the outer surfaces of the form, then linear-type inwardly curved parts directed towards the bag interior are produced in the foil regions. If both an inwardly curved part is provided on the one side and an outwardly curved part is provided on the other side, then both a groove or channel directed towards the bag interior and a groove or channel directed towards the surrounding region of the bag are produced in the bag foil. Aligned reinforcements on two foil regions of the bag can also be produced in simple manner in that a heated tool is arranged on the one side of the bag and the form is arranged on the opposite side of the bag. Then,-two identically aligned shapings are produced as a result of the pressure of the hot tool (temperature is lower than the sealing temperature) against the form. Instead of the form, a further hot tool which constitutes a negative to the other tool can also be used. The two reinforcement regions can also already be shaped into the incoming foil for a packaging machine, so that only once the foil shaping is complete is the stabilized bag formed directly.
The pour opening of the bag can be stabilized even further if two reinforcements tapering towards one another at an acute angle are provided in a bag surface. Moreover, a further improvement is achieved if the reinforcements are connected to one another at their ends further away from one another by means of a further reinforcement.
The tearing open of the bag at the pour opening is simplified if a tear aid is provided at the pour opening. The tear aid may be constructed as a punched part whereof the penetration depth is smaller than the foil thickness, or as a corresponding perforated part. In both cases, conventional packaging foils may be used into which the tear aid is provided during the shaping of the foil or during fusing of the bag. If the tear aid has the shape of an uninterrupted depression, the break-open force is minimized. If the tear aid is provided in a bag comprising a twolayer composite foil, then the punching or the perforating can only be carried out in the outer foil layer of the bag if the penetration depth of the tear aid is smaller than or equal to the layer thickness of this layer. As a result, sealing deficiencies along the tear aid are also avoided if the tear aid extends over a sealing seam. A suitable composite foil for this is a polyester/polyethylene composite.
The bag according to the invention is stable if it is 6 free-standing, ie has a standing base.
Embodiments of the invention will be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Fig. 1 shows, in a side view, a bag constructed as a free standing bag having reinforcements tapering towards one another at an acute angle in the region of the pour opening, Fig. 2 shows, on an enlarged scale, a section AA according to Fig. 1 through a two-layer composite foil, and Fig. 3 shows, in a side view, an opened-out foil blank for producing the bag of Fig. 1, but having in addition a reinforcement which connects the ends of the two reinforcements of Fig. 1 which are further away from one another.
A bag 2 constructed as a standing-base or free-standing bag 1 has a pour opening 3 with reinforcements 4 tapering at an acute angle towards one another (Fig. 1). Each reinforcement 4 is a double linear shaping 5, 6 of the foil 7 of the bag 2 (Fig. 2). The pour opening 3 is provided in a corner of the bag 2 and has a contoured shape (Fig. 1). The reinforcements 4 extend 7 between the contours 8, 9 of the pour opening 3. Each reinforcement 4 has the shape of a groove or channel 10 (Fig. 2) and has been hot-formed. Two reinforcements 4, 13 are arranged in alignment with one another on each of the two foil regions 11, 12 which constitute the covering surfaces of the bag 2.
A tear aid 14 is provided at the pour opening 3 of the bag 2. The tear aid 14 is a punched part 15 whereof the penetration depth is smaller than the foil thickness. The tear aid 14 has the shape of an uninterrupted depression 16 which extends over the surfaces of the two foil regions 11, 12 of the bag 2 (Fig. 2). The bag 2 produced from a two-layer composite foil 17. The tear aid 14 only extends in the outer layer 18 of the composite foil 17. The penetration depth of the tear aid 14 is equal to the layer thickness of this layer 18. This layer 18 can for example be the polyester layer of a polyester/polyethylene composite foil.
In order to manufacture a bag as described above, the reinforcements 4, 13 can be arranged to be in alignment by preshaping the reinforcements 4 in an opened-out bag 2 before the bag is assembled by folding the foil 7 along a fold line 19 and fusing along its edges (Fig. 3). In the case of the bag blank 20 illustrated in Fig. 3, the reinforcements 4, 13 are connected to one another 8 at their ends which are further away from one another by means of a further reinforcement 21.
9 Cl ai ms 1. A bag having at least one reinforcement in the regionof a pour opening, the reinforcement being a substantially single or multiple shaping of the bag wall.
