Abstract
A gas valve as located in a steel wall box of the kind used for electrical switches, and provided with a matching cover plate 30 through a central aperture 34 of which access may be had to a slot 36 of the valve to turn it on or off. The valve, seen in Figure 2 in cross section, is intended for use as an isolator valve for a domestic gas fire or like and comprises a plug 22 turnable to register opening 26 therein with corresponding ports in the valve body. <IMAGE>
Description
GAS VALVE
This invention relates to gas valves primarily for
domestic use.
According to the invention a gas valve comprises a bo(iy having an inlet and at least one outlet, all located
in casing adapted for nountino on or in a wall, and
hiving a control member to turn the valve on and off
accessible through a cover of the casing.
It is preferred to use a conventional steel wall box
of the well known kind as used for electric installations
and made to a BSS specification as the casing. Such wall
boxes are intended to hold any one of a range of
switches, spur units, sockets and the like. These boxes
have covers eld to the box by a pair of screws and
extending marginally beyond the box so as to for example
seat on the wall about the box and provide a neat and
pleasing finish hiding the box from view. The
conventional electric wall box cover has any of a range
of apertures or not according to need.Just such a cover may be employed with the invention in this case for
example wit a central hole so that an on off knob may be
mounted on the cover to turn a spindle extending through
the hole and into the box and valve, or so that the
control member inside the box niay be turned by a tool for
example a screwdriver inserted through the hole.
These steel wall boxes are conventionally made with apertures in the side walls and which are normally
blanked off but ready to be pressed out, and the box used
for the present invention may be similar so that gas
pipes may be led through appropriate holes after removing
the blanking discs, ccording to the gas connections to
be made.
Preferably the valve body is of generally Tee sllape with two outlets and provided with a cap nut for closing
one not in use when as is usual the valve supplies only a
single appliance.
The gas valve of the invention may be used as an isolator valve for a domestic appliance such as a gas fire so as to house the gas tap, i.e. the valve in the casing, neatly and inconspicuously. The cover may match those already in use for electric outlets and controls in the same room, for example being made of a white or coloured plastic or with other decorative finish as desired.
One embodiment of the invention is more particularly described with reference to the accompanying drawings wherein:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the arrangement according to the invention with the cover removed; and
Figure 2 is a sectional elevation with the cover in position.
The steel wall box comprises side walls 10, 12, which may be apertured for connection to the inlet 14 and from the outlets 16, 18 of the gas valve which is fixed in the box and to the base thereof by a pair of studs and nuts 20.
In this embodiment, the valve is of the taper plug kind, in which the plug 22 is urged into a complementary bore by spring 24, and can be turned to different angular positions to register passages such as 26 opening through the plug with corresponding ports in the valve body so as to establish gas flow through the valve or interrupt such flow.
The cover 30 is held in position by a pair of screws engaged in the holes 32, and has a central aperture 34 enabling screw-driver access to the slot 36 to turn the plug between the various positions.
Claims (6)
1. A gas valve comprising a body having an inlet and at least one outlet, all located in casing adapted for mounting on or in a wall, and having a control member to turn the valve on and off accessible through a cover of the casing.
2. A gas valve as claimed in Claim 1 wherein the casing is a steel wall box provided with a cover held in place by a nunlber of screws.
3. A gas valve as claimed in Claim 1 or Claim 2 wherein the casing has side walls which are provided with blanked off apertttres located opposite to at least one outlet from the gas valve.
4. A gas valve as claimed in any preceding claim wherein a spindle extends through the cover to the control member.
5. A gas valve as claimed in any of Claims 1 to 4 wherein the control member is provided with a slot for operalon by a screwdriver accessible through the cover.
6. A gas valve substantially as described.
