Abstract

A combined arm and clamp, suitable, for example, for supporting a percussion instrument from the stand of a drum set, comprises a rod 2 bent near one end through a right angle, the bent portions then being bent back on itself to form a U. The end of the U is threaded 6 and a length of angle section 8 is attached to the inside of the bend. A link 9 across the U enables a nut 7 screwed on the threaded portion to clamp the arm to the stand. The arm may be telescopic. It may carry, for example, a cymbal, a set of musical chimes or a microphone. <IMAGE>

Description

Combined arm and clamp The invention relates to a combined arm and clamp which is simple in form1 robust, inexpensive to manufacture, and capable of clamping on to rods or tubes of different diameters and shapes.

The invention is particularly suitable for attachment to an upright rod or tube, or for hanging from a horizontal rod or tube.

One application of the invention is in connection with musical instruments. A band will normally have a set of drums with stands which also carry one or more other instruments, for example a cymbal, a set of chimes, a triangle or other percussion instrument, and the invention provides a means of attaching such instruments securely and so that they are readily adjustable for height and position. The arm and bracket may also be attached to other stands, for example it may be attached to a music stand or a microphone or lighting stand. The arm may be telescopic, to allow for adjustment in height or position.

The invention, which is defined in the appended claims, will be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a view of an arm and clamp according to the invention, the arm being designed for attachment to any stand of a drum set for carrying a cymbal, Figure 2 is a detail of the clamp of Figure 1, and Figure 3 illustrates how the clamp is adaptable to various diameters of upright tube or rod.

Figure 1 is a view of a combined arm and clamp for supporting a cymbal on a set of drums. The drum set incorporates various stands which include upright rods, to one of which, 1, the arm 2 is to be clamped. The upper end of the arm 2 is threaded at 3 for the attachment of a cymbal, and the lower end carries the clamp 4.

The arm 2 is bent at 5, near the clamp, so that the arm will be inclined at an angle of 300 to the horizontal. Below this bend the arm is bent through a right angle in a horizontal plane and then bent back on itself to form a U, as shown also in Figure 2. The end of the U is threaded at 6 to take a nut or knob 7. A short length of angle section 8 is attached, preferably by welding, to the inside of the U at right angles to its plane and a link 9 threaded on one arm of the U can be swung across to engage the other arm. The knob 7 is screwed on to the thread 6 and clamps the upright rod 1 between the link 9 and the angle section 8.

Figure 3 shows how the clamp is adaptable to different rod diameters, ranging from a very small diameter as shown at 10 to a diameter 11 only slightly less than the internal width of the U.

In order to ensure that it does not bind on the thread it is preferable for the link 9 to have a slight bend in the middle so as to maintain the link approximately at right angles to the outer arm of the U over its range of adjustment.

The arm as described above was designed to carry a cymbal, but the invention is also applicable to supporting other instruments, or a microphone. Where appropriate the arm may be telescopic, so as to allow for adjustment in height or position.

Claims

1. A combined arm and clamp comprising a rod bent near one end through a right angle, the bent portion then being bent back on itself to form a U, the end being threaded, with a length of angle section attached to the inside of the U at right angles to its plane, and with a link swingable across the U, whereby a nut screwed on the threaded portion can clamp a rod or tube between the link and the angle section to attach the arm to the rod or tube.

2. A combined arm and clamp according to claim 1 in which the link is bent through an angle in the middle such that the outer end is substantially at right angles to the threaded portion throughout the greater part of its travel.

3. A combined arm and clamp according to claim 1 or claim 2 in which the arm is telescopic.

4. A stand comprising an upright rod or tube to which are clamped one or more arms according to any preceding claim.

5. A musical instrument stand comprising a stand according to claim 4 in which the upright rod or tube carries a musical instrument and an arm carries a cymbal or a set of musical chimes.

6. A stand according to claim 4 in which either the upright rod or tube or an arm carries a microphone.
