Description

TROUGHS The present invention relates to a trough and to a method of manufacturing a trough and is concerned particularly, although not exclusively, with a trough for use as guttering on a building and with a method of manufacturing the same.
According to a first aspect of the present invention there is provided a trough for use as a gutter element on a building structure, the trough comprising a channel portion and a support portion, wherein the channel portion is arranged in use to conduct fluid and the support portion is arranged to support the channel portion, the channel portion and the support portion together forming a substantially hollow section.
The channel portion may comprise at least one sheet of folded material, which forms a channel profile. The support portion may comprise at least one sheet of folded material which forms a support profile.
The channel portion and/or the support portion may comprise sheet metal. In a preferred arrangement, the channel portion and/or the support portion comprise sheet aluminium.
Preferably the channel portion is attached to the support portion along at least one and preferably two elongate edges of the channel portion. In a preferred arrangement the channel portion and the support portion are welded together at least one and preferably several spaced apart locations.
There may be provided sealing means between the channel portion and the support portion. Preferably the sealing means comprises a strip of sealing material which sealing material may comprise silicone.
In a preferred arrangement the trough comprises at least one connection member for use in connecting the trough to at least one other portion of trough.
The trough may be arranged in use to interface with a solid wooden portion of trough and may be provided with sealing means for sealing the trough with a wooden trough.
The sealing means may comprise a sealant such as silicone.
In a preferred arrangement there is provided a shield member comprising a channel profile arranged in use to rest in the channel portion of the trough and to protect the sealed joint between the trough and the wooden trough.
According to a second aspect of the present invention there is provided a trough for use on a building structure, the trough being of substantially hollow section.
The trough may comprise at least one sheet of folded material and may comprise a channel portion arranged in use to conduct fluid and the support portion may be arranged in use to support the channel portion.
Preferably the trough comprises sheet metal and may comprise sheet aluminium.
The trough may be according to any statement herein.
According to a third aspect of the present invention there is provided a method of constructing a trough, for use on a building structure, the method comprising forming a channel portion to conduct fluid and a support portion to support the channel portion, the method further comprising mounting the channel portion on the support portion to form a substantially hollow section.
The method may include forming the channel portion and/or the support portion from at least one sheet of material.
The method may comprise forming the channel portion and/or the support portion from a sheet of metal and preferably of aluminium.
Preferably the method comprises attaching the channel portion to the support portion by welding them together at least one location and preferably at several spaced apart locations.
The method may comprise sealably attaching the channel portion to the support portion.
The method may include manufacturing a trough according to any statement herein.
The invention also includes any combination of the features or limitations referred to herein.
The invention may be carried into practice in various ways but an embodiment will now be described by way of example with reference to the accompanying diagrammatic drawings in which: Figure 1 shows in cross-sectional view a trough according to an embodiment of the present invention for use on a building structure, Figure 2 shows a portion of the trough of Figure 1 in a side view and Figure 3 shows connecting brackets for the trough of Figures 1 and 2.
Referring to Figures 1 and 2 a trough 10 for use as roof guttering on a building structure (not shown) comprises an inner channel portion 11 of folded aluminium sheet, and an outer support portion 12 also of folded aluminium sheet.
The channel portion 11 has a shoulder 13 which extends over and rests on the support portion 12 along the extent of the trough. As shown in Figure 2, the two portions are held together by welding at spaced apart locations 14 along the extent of the trough 10. A silicone sealing strip (not shown) is attached to the joint to prevent ingress of eg rainwater into cavity 15 between the channel portion 11 and the support portion 12. Drain holes 20 are provided through a lower part of the support portion 12, at positions 22 (Figure 2).
Figure 2 also shows aluminium end-cap portions 16 which are welded to the hollow trough to close its ends.
Figure 3 shows a set of 4 aluminium connection brackets 17 attached to the trough. The separate sections of trough are linked together using stainless steel bolts which pass through brackets on adjacent sections of trough.
In use, the hollow-trough 10 is conventionally attached below a roof of a building (not shown). The channel portion 11 collects rainwater from the roof, which water is carried along the channel section to four pipes (not shown). Any water that seeps into the cavity 15 is discharged therefrom via the drain holes 20.
The sheet aluminium structure resists corrosion and it is believed that this substantially maintenance-free construction may last several times longer when compared with the traditional wooden troughs which are prone to rotting and which therefore require painting and other maintenance. The hollow construction is light and therefore easy to manipulate during installation of the trough as compared with the solid troughs of the prior art. Furthermore, the support portion 12 with the channel portion 11 together are strong enough to resist the force of a ladder resting against them, for example during cleaning of windows or other maintenance work being carried out on the building.
Whilst the invention has been described above in relation to an aluminium trough, it will be understood by the skilled person that other materials may be used without departing from the scope of the invention.
