Description

HOLDING DEVICE The present invention relates to a holding device for holding an object against sliding on a generally horizontal surface.
According to the invention, there is provided a holding device for holding an object against sliding on a generally horizonal surface in two directions, which holding device comprises a base member for placing underneath a said object, gripping means provided underneath the base member for in use maintaining the holding device in position on a said surface, and blocking means provided on the base member for blocking a said object against sliding relative to the base member in said two directions.
It is preferred that the base member is substantially planar.
The blocking means may be provided on a side or along an edge of the base member.
It is preferred that the blocking means is substantially planar.
In a preferred embodiment, the blocking means is provided by two walls inclined substantially at right angles relative to each other. The walls are more preferably joint.
In a specific construction, the base member and the blocking means are substantially triangular.
Preferably, the base member and the blocking means are formed integrally as one piece.
It is preferable that the gripping means is operable to grip a said surface by engagement or substantially by friction.
The gripping means preferably comprises numerous small projections, and is more preferably provided by Velcro hooks.
The invention will now be more particularly described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of an embodiment of a holding device in accordance with the invention; Figure 2 is a side view, taken in the direction of arrow II, of the holding device of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a plan view, taken in the direction of arrow III, of the holding device of Figure 1; and Figure 4 is an underneath plan view, taken in the direction of arrow IV, of the holding device of Figure 1.
Referring to Figures 1 to 3 of the drawings, there is shown a holding device 10 embodying the invention, which holding device 10 comprises a base plate 11 and two vertical walls 12 upstanding from the base plate 11. The base plate 11 is generally a right-angled triangle having two equal sides (edges) from which the corresponding walls 12 extend vertically upwards. The two walls 12 join each other along a common vertical side, thereby forming together with the base plate 11 a three-dimensional hollow corner configuration.
Each side wall 12 is generally triangular and has an Lshaped cut-out 13. The free end of each adjoining portion between the base plate 11 and each side wall 12 or between the two side walls 12 is absent (designated by reference numeral 14) in order to avoid any sharp point.
The base plate 11 and the side walls 12 are moulded integrally as one piece from plastics or other suitable material.
The holding device 10 further includes gripping means provided on the underside of the base plate 11, in the form of a Velcro (trade mark) engagement tape 15 having numerous projecting hooks. The gripping tape 15 is attached onto the base plate 11 either by suitable adhesive or stitching along the periphery of the tape 15. For maximum gripping action, the gripping tape 15 has a shape corresponding to and as permissibly large as that of the base plate 11.
The holding device 10 is designed to be used to hold an object, such as a piece of luggage, against sliding in two directions in, say, the boot of a car. The boot base surface is normally fibrous or felt, which the Velcro tape 15 will grip when placed there-against, particularly when the holding device 10 is pressed down by the piece of luggage. In use, the holding device 10 is placed closely around a bottom corner of the piece of luggage, with the base plate 11 and gripping tape 15 pressed down to grip the boot base surface and the side walls 12 blocking the piece of luggage against sliding relative to the base plate 11 in either one or both of the directions of the corresponding walls 12.
A pair of the holding devices 10 will normally be adequate for a piece of light weight luggage, placed against diagonally opposite luggage bottom corners. For a piece of heavy luggage, four holding devices 10 may be required at all the bottom corners of the piece of luggage. When a piece of luggage is placed in a corner of the car boot, one such holding device 10 may be enough for the exposed luggage bottom corner.
It is envisaged that the bottom gripping surface of the holding device of the invention may be provided by implanted short tiny nylon hair (at regular intervals), preferably pointing in orthogonal directions towards the corresponding blocking walls. In a different construction, the gripping surface may be provided by numerous tiny rigid projections.
Where the object is to be held against sliding on a nonfibrous surface, such as on the deck of a yacht, the gripping surface of the holding device may be provided by a (frictional) rubber pad or mat. It is to be appreciated that a gripping surface having numerous tiny rubber projections may be able to grip most, if not all, supporting surface for the present purpose.
It is envisaged that the blocking walls 12 may be replaced by upstanding studs, posts or blocks, whether two or more in number.
The invention provides an add-on holding device which is convenient to use and can be removed by simply lifting it up.
The invention has been given by way of example only, and various other modifications of and/or alterations to the described embodiment may be made by persons skilled in the art without departing from the scope of the invention as specified in the appended claims.
