Abstract

A bulk harvesting bin 1 for fruits and vegetables comprises a bottom wall 3, support skids 4 and 5 for spacing the bottom wall 3 from the ground, and side walls 6, 7, 8 and 9. In order to prevent excessive bowing of the bottom wall 3 under load, the bottom wall 3 is formed with strengthening ribs 13 and 14 which extend between two opposing side walls 7 and 9 and are secured at their ends to the opposing side walls 7 and 9 so that the loading forces are transmitted to the side walls 7 and 9. <IMAGE>

Description

"Bulk Harvestina Bins" This invention relates to bulk harvesting bins for fruits and vegetables.
Bulk harvesting bins, which are generally made of wood, are commonly used for containing fruits and vegetables as they are harvested and for transport and storage of the fruits and vegetables. The bins are adapted to be stacked one on top of the other and to be picked up by a fork lift. Furthermore the bins are designed to allow adequate air circulation around the fruits or vegetables, and to be sufficiently rugged to enable them to be used a large number of times. However, there is a tendency for the bottoms of the bins to bow under the weight of the fruits or vegetables, and this can have the effect of subjecting the fruit to compression forces which may damage the fruit.
It is an object of the invention to provide a generally improved bulk harvesting bin for fruits and vegetables.
According to the present invention there is provided a bulk harvesting bin comprising a base which includes a bottom wall and support skids for spacing the bottom wall from the ground, and side walls extending upwardly from the base and defining therebetween an opentopped volume for containing fruits or vegetables supported by the bottom wall, wherein the bottom wall is formed with a strengthening rib which extends across the bottom wall between two opposing side walls and which is secured at its ends to said opposing side walls.
The strengthening rib serves to prevent excessive bowing of the bottom wall under the weight of fruits or vegetables which would otherwise tend to produce compression forces tending to damage the fruits or vegetables. Because the strengthening rib is secured to the side walls the loading forces are transmitted to the side walls, and the bin is rendered more rigid so that compression damage to the fruits or vegetables is minimised. Thus the quality of fruits or vegetables stored or transported in such bins is improved.
Preferably the strengthening rib is in the form of a batten which is secured to the bottom wall, as by nails, bolts or staples, at locations spaced along its length, and optionally also by gluing.
The strengthening rib is conveniently secured to said opposing side walls by angle brackets.
In one embodiment of the invention the bottom wall is formed with two strengthening ribs which extend parallel to one another across the bottom wall between said opposing side walls and each of which is secured at its ends to said opposing side walls.
Furthermore it is preferred that the bottom wall is secured in two opposite end regions to the support skids, as by bolts.
The bottom wall is advantageously provided with air vents extending through the bottom wall at locations spaced from the side walls. Such air vents allow air to circulate around the fruits or vegetables so as not only to optimise storage conditions at ambient temperature but also to permit more rapid cooling of the fruits or vegetables in a cold store.
The air vents may be in the form of parallel slots spaced apart across the width of the bottom wall, and preferably disposed in two or more rows separated by the strengthening rib or ribs. Slots may also be provided at the edges of the bottom wall for added ventilation.
The invention also provides a bulk harvesting bin comprising a base which includes a bottom wall and support skids for spacing the bottom wall from the ground, and side walls extending upwardly from the base and defining therebetween an open-topped volume for containing fruits or vegetables supported by the bottom wall, wherein the bottom wall is provided with air vents extending through the bottom wall at locations spaced from the side walls.
In order that the invention may be more fully understood, a preferred bulk harvesting bin in accordance with the invention will now be described, by way of example, with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of the bin; Figures 2 and 3 are views of the bin from above and below respectively; and Figure 4 is a section through the bin taken along the line IV-IV in Figure 3.
The bin 1 shown in Figure 1, which is made of wood and typically of approximate overall dimensions 120cm x 100cm x 67cm, comprises a base 2 including a plywood bottom wall 3 and support skids 4 and 5, and four plywood side walls 6, 7, 8 and 9 extending upwardly from the base 2. Each of the support skids 4 and 5 comprises a groundengaging batten 10 and three wooden blocks 11 to which the batten 10 and bottom wall 3 are secured by flat-headed bolts IlA (see Figure 3) and nailing and gluing. The purpose of the skids 4 and 5 is to space the bottom wall 3 from the ground so as to enable the bin to be lifted from below either manually or by means of a fork lift.The side walls 6, 7, 8 and 9 are secured to one another by nailing and gluing their edges to corner posts 12, and are secured to the base 2 by nailing and gluing them to the bottom wall 3 and the skids 4 and 5.
As may be seen more particularly in the view from above shown in Figure 2, the bottom wall 3 is provided with two strengthening ribs in the form of battens 13 and 14 which extend parallel to one another across the bottom wall 3 between the opposing side walls 7 and 9. Furthermore the battens 13 and 14 are secured at their ends to the side walls 7 and 9 by angle brackets 15 (see Figures 1 and 3) connected to the battens and side walls by bolts. The bottom wall 3 is secured to the battens 13 and 14 by bolts and by nailing and gluing.
Furthermore, as will be appreciated particularly by referring to the views from above and below shown in Figures 2 and 3, the bottom wall is provided with air vents in the form of parallel slots 16 having rounded ends spaced from the side walls, the slots 16 being disposed in three rows separated by the battens 13 and 14. Each row consists of five equally spaced slots 16, and in addition two further edge slots 17 are provided at the two ends of the middle row. The slots 16 and 17 are of such a length that they cannot be completely obstructed by a single fruit or vegetable. Furthermore, as will be appreciated by referring to Figure 4, the battens 13 and 14 and the slots 16 have rounded edges 17 and 18 so as to avoid damage to the fruits or vegetables such as might be caused by the presence of sharp edges.
The reinforcement of the bottom wall 3 of the bin by means of the battens 13 and 14 and angle brackets 15 prevents bowing of the bottom wall 3, and enables the bin to withstand loading by vegetables and fruits up to a total weight which may be well in excess of 300 Kgs.
Furthermore the structural integrity of the bin is such that the compression forces to which fruits or vegetables stored in the bin are subjected due to bowing of the bottom of the bin is minimised, and the bin is capable of withstanding heavy use over a considerable number of years. The ventilation provided by the slots 16 and 17 enables fruits or vegetables to be stored in the bin for a substantial length of time, and to remain of good quality throughout that time. Also such ventilation permits more rapid cooling of the fruits or vegetables in a cold store than would otherwise be the case, and thus provides an improvement in the quality of fruits or vegetables stored in such a cold store.

Claims (13)

1. A bulk harvesting bin comprising a base which includes a bottom wall and support skids for spacing the bottom wall from the ground, and side walls extending upwardly from the base and defining therebetween an opentopped volume for containing fruits or vegetables supported by the bottom wall, wherein the bottom wall is formed with a strengthening rib which extends across the bottom wall between two opposing side walls and which is secured at its ends to said opposing side walls.
2. A bin according to claim 1, wherein the strengthening rib is in the form of a batten which is secured to the bottom wall.
3. A bin according to claim 2, wherein the strengthening rib is secured to the bottom wall at locations spaced along its length by nails, bolts or staples.
4. A bin according to claim 2 or 3, wherein the strengthening rib is secured to the bottom wall by gluing.
5. A bin according to any preceding claim, wherein the strengthening rib is secured to said opposing side walls by angle brackets.
6. A bin according to any preceding claim, wherein the bottom wall is formed with two strengthening ribs which extend parallel to one another across the bottom wall between said opposing side walls and each of which is secured at its ends to said opposing side walls.
7. A bin according to any preceding claim, wherein the bottom wall is secured in two opposite end regions to the support skids.
8. A bin according to claim 7, wherein the bottom wall is secured to the support skids at said two opposite end regions by bolts.
9. A bin according to any preceding claim, wherein the bottom wall is provided with air vents extending through the bottom wall at locations spaced from the side walls.
10. A bin according to claim 9, wherein the air vents are in the form of parallel slots spaced apart across the width of the bottom wall.
11. A bin according to claim 10, wherein the air vents are disposed in two or more rows separated by the strengthening rib or ribs.
12. A bulk harvesting bin comprising a base which includes a bottom wall and support skids for spacing the bottom wall from the ground, and side walls extending upwardly from the base and defining therebetween an opentopped volume for containing fruits or vegetables supported by the bottom wall, wherein the bottom wall is provided with air vents extending through the bottom wall at locations spaced from the side walls.
13. A bulk harvesting bin substantially as hereinbefore described with reference to the accompanying drawings.
