Roller-and-breast mills.-A process of disintegrating and mixing moulding sand in which the mass is subjected to rigid disintegrating and mixing means at one side and to flexible disintegrating and mixing means on the opposite side includes the steps of disintegrating the fibre-containing portions, brushing the fibre out by flexible means, carding the fibre from the flexible means by the rigid means, and intimately mixing the fibre with and distributing it throughout the entire mass. In a machine for carrying out the process, the element that carries the flexible disintegrating-means is mounted swingably toward and away from the element that carries the rigid disintegrating-means. As shown, the sand is delivered by a belt conveyer 28, Fig. 1, with buckets to between a rotary element 1 having comparatively rigid disintegrating-projections or stiff metallic fingers 2 and a stationary concave element 3 having comparatively flexible disintegrating-projections or steel bristles 4 forming a steel brush. The element 3 is pivoted at 5 and pressed towards the element 1 by means of a spring 6 adjustable by a screw 7 and nut 20. The treated sand falls on to a screen 11 vibrated by a cam 17, and the metal particles separated by the screen pass over an inclined ledge 13 to an electromagnet 14. The machine is mounted on wheels 29, and the conveyer 28 works in a shoot 25 having a mouth or scoop portion 26. The cam 17 and conveyer 28 are operated by belts from the shaft of the element 1, which is driven by a belt 21 from a motor 8. Fig. 8 shows the element 3 swingably mounted adjacent its upper end at 5<1> on a bolt 35 having nuts 36, 37 on opposite sides of the supporting frame 38. The screw 7<1> with nut 20<1> for adjusting the spring 6<1> is pivoted at 39 to the element 3 adjacent its lower edge.
