Abstract

A method of moulding a synthetic plastics handle in place on a hand tool includes the step of fitting a resilient sealing member (19) on a root end portion (16) of said tool before said root end portion has been located between the two halves (10 and 12) of the moulding die such that on closure of the moulding die a fluid tight seal is formed between the die halves and the sealing member. <IMAGE>

Description

Tool handle moulding The invention relates to the moulding of synthetic plastics handles on hand tools such as screwdrivers and chisels.
It is a particular problem that if the two halves of a moulding die are not brought fully together during the moulding of a handle on a tool such as a screwdriver or chisel, perhaps due to the bolster part of the tool blade being slightly oversize, "flash" will be formed on the tool handle, that is to say, an escape of the plastics material in the liquid state will form a thin fringe of plastics material extending along the parting line of the die and spoil the finished product.
Such "flash" subsequently needs to be trimmed off in a manual operation. This is expensive and the surface finish of the handle will inevitably be impaired. A similar problem exists if the two halves of the moulding die are brought fully together but fail to seal around the bolster of the blade of the tool concerned due to said bolster being slightly undersize. In this case, the "flash" takes place along the cylindrical surface of the bolster and is again troublesome and expensive to remove.
According to one aspect of the invention, there is provided a method of moulding a synthetic plastics handle in place on a hand tool comprising an operative member projecting from said handle, the method including fitting a resilient sealing member on a portion of said member to be disposed at the junction with the handle, and locating said root end portion between the two halves of a moulding die in such a way that the closure of the die forms a fluid tight seal around the sealing member. It is then possible to ensure that there is no other contact between the operative member and the interior of the die that might obstruct the full closure of the die.
The method may include the preliminary step of providing a circumferential recess in said junction portion with which the sealing member can register to retain it in its required position. The circumferential groove may be provided by securing a pre-formed sleeve element having such a groove on a length of rod which is to form the operative member of the tool, such as a blade. Said sleeve element may be secured non-rotatably on said length of rod by forcing of said sleeve element partly onto an integral key portion of said length of rod. The key portion may be formed on said length of rod.by flattening and thereby spreading a tail end portion of the length of rod.
According to another aspect of the invention, there is provided a tool with a synthetic plastics handle moulded on a root end portion of an operative member of said tool, there being an external resilient member surrounding a junction region between said handle and said member. The tool may be provided with a bolster between the handle and operative member, and said bolster may be of non-circular cross section. A sleeve element secured non-rotatably on the operating member may comprise the bolster. The sleeve element may be secured on the member by being forced onto an integral key portion of said member, said key portion having been formed, for example, by flattening and spreading a tail end portion of said member.
One specific embodiment of the invention will now be described, by way of example only, with reference to the accompanying drawings, of which: Figure 1 is a part-sectional view of a moulding die during the moulding of a tool handle by a method embodying the invention, Figure 2 is a view illustrating the preparation of a root end portion of a tool blade prior to the moulding of a plastics handle thereon by the inventive method, and Figure 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 in Figure 2.
Referring now to Figure 1 of the drawings, the moulding die there illustrated forms part of a moulding machine and has die halves 10 and 12 which are brought together on opposite sides of a tool blade, in this case a screwdriver blade, to form a mould cavity 14. A root end 16 of the tool blade extends into the mould cavity for the synthetic plastics material injected therein to form a handle around said root end.
In Figure 2 there is illustrated the preparation of the root end of the tool blade prior to its location in the moulding machine, the preparation comprising the fitment of a resilient sealing washer 18 on a pre-formed sleeve element generally indicated 19 and the securing of said sleeve element on a length of steel rod 21 which is to form the tool blade. In being fitted onto the root end of the tool blade, the plastics sealing washer is forced along a cylindrical portion 20 of said sleeve element, on which it is an interference fit, until it abuts against a bolster 22,the bolster in this case being of hexagonal cross-section. (As it is brought into abutment with the bolster, the sealing washer surrounds a circumferential groove 24 between the portion 20 and bolster; a leading end portion of the sealing washer is able to register in said groove to retain said washer in abutment with the bolster during a subsequent operation of mounting the tool blade in position between the two halves of the moulding die).
Substantially simultaneously with the fitment of the resilient sealing washer on the pre-formed sleeve element in the manner just described, said sleeve element is secured non-rotatably on the length of steel rod 21 by being forced partly onto an integral key portion 26 at or near the tail end of said length of rod. In this specific example, the key portion 26 has been formed at or near the tail end portion of said length of rod by flattening and thereby spreading said tail end portion in a way which retains the same cross sectional area of material at that point.
Referring once again to Figure 1, it will be seen that when the tool blade has been located in position between the two halves of the moulding die, the die can be closed to form a fluid tight seal around the plastics sealing washer. The two halves of the die do not close upon the surface of the bolster 22, and in fact are spaced from the faces of the hexagonal shape which in this illustrated embodiment forms said bolster. Thus it will be seen that although the root end of the tool blade has not been machined to very close tolerances, that is to say, the bolster has not needed to be machined to very close limits of accuracy, which would be expensive, the presence of the sealing washer on the tool blade as it is entered into the moulding machine ensures that the moulding of the handle thereon will be "flash" free.Because the sealing washer is made of a resilient material, it can be ensured that the closure of the two halves of the moulding die fully into abutment one with the other will bring about some radially inward deformation of said sealing washer sufficient to ensure a fluid tight seal around said washer and along the surfaces of the tool blade root end portion. If the material of which the handle is being moulded is of a contrasting colour to that of the sealing washer, the finished tool will be of a pleasing appearance. The fact that the bolster can be of hexagonal cross section is particularly useful if the tool concerned is a screwdriver because this enables a wrench to be applied to the bolster if the user needs to apply greater torque than can be applied purely by manual gripping of the screwdriver.
When the handle has been moulded, that portion of it which surrounds the part of the pre-formed sleeve element which has previously been forced onto the key portion 26 of the rod is thereby locked permanently thereon.
Various modifications may be made. For example, the sealing washer could be differently shaped to be arranged to deform in some way to ensure a fluid tight seal when acted on by the moulding die halves. The tool blade and root end portion could be machined from solid bar instead of being made as an assembly of steel rod and sleeve element as in the illustrated embodiment.
The method of manufacture may be used for the production of many types of tool other than screwdrivers and chisels, that is to say any kind of tool comprising an operative member on which a synthetic plastics handle is moulded in a moulding die.
